Re: Nice looking camera
I was interested in that Samsung until I discovered it won't take the Pentax pancake lenses. I gather it does have an adapter but no electronics ... so I stopped bothering to look into it.

Re: Nice looking camera
Samsung won't say that the relationship with Pentax is finished, but I can't see any evidence of it being active. I don't know if the new K-5 announced today uses a Samsung sensor, but I would hazard a guess that it's a Sony one. All the other recent Pentax DSLRs have Sony sensors.Originally posted by Pol View PostI was interested in that Samsung until I discovered it won't take the Pentax pancake lenses. Samsung is very focussed on its own in-house technology. They won't even use third party branding like Schneider Kreuznach for their NX lenses.

Re: Nice looking camera
I'm going to the Fujifilm press conference here at Photokina tomorrow, so should know more about the new camera after that.

Re: Nice looking camera
In that sort of price range I don't think the camera will sell. It may appeal to a niche market, mainly because of its retro looks etc. However, the fact it has a fixed lens will always be the main shortcoming. Some of you may like these pancake lenses, but they are interchangeable and I think people in the modern digital age expect the flexibility of being able to change a lens or at the very least have zoom facility

I agree a none interchangeable Zoom lens would have made the camera much more commercial.Originally posted by Stephen View PostIn that sort of price range I don't think the camera will sell. Re: Nice looking camera
In some forums where the rumored price was $1700 and the nearest comparable camera is the Leica X1 at $2000, there didn't seem to be any outrage about that price. At $1000, I would start to wonder if Fuji could keep up with demand. The "niche" may be larger than you guess and it gets larger as the price goes down.Originally posted by Stephen View PostIn that sort of price range I don't think the camera will sell. My take on it is that it will be the finder that makes the X100 just as it is the finder that makes the Leica M. The X100 will be the closest affordable faux Leica M on the market and that will draw many who like that mytique. I'd like a longer focal legnth (I usually have a 50mm on my M8 , but it looks like a fun camera.

Only time will tell I suppose Bob, though frankly I would be even less inclined to buy a Leica X1 or a Leica MOriginally posted by Bob Ross View PostIn some forums where the rumored price was $1700 and the nearest comparable camera is the Leica X1 at $2000, there didn't seem to be any outrage about that price. In my world Leicas costing that sort of money are rare. The red spot is a status symbol among many owners and its still my opinion that they appeal to a niche market.
I have no doubt that this X100 will come down in price, but it is still only going to appeal to a limited number of people because of its fixed single focal length lens. It is just too limiting for real world photographers
I know you are a Leica owner Bob and I don't mean to upset you, on the contrary I have a great respect for your opinion and insight into such matters. I'd certainly agree about the viewfinder, though the optical version (maybe the EVF too) at least is certainly easier to design simply because of the fixed focal length. I still can't work out how the price can be justified, unless its because Fuji themselves accept that they will only produce and sell it in small numbers

I was under the impression that most Leica's purchased were by collectors and few cameras sold actually get unpacked from the box let alone used.Originally posted by Stephen View PostOnly time will tell I suppose Bob, though frankly I would be even less inclined to buy a Leica X1 or a Leica M

Re: Nice looking camera
I agree that there is no question that products like the X100 are limited production boutique offerings and in the overall unit sales picture, just an artifact
I think the X100 is significant for showing the way for optical viewfinders that are currently missing in the lower end P&S and mFT cameras. I think that this Photokina is showing some new direction possibilities in stuff like Sony's translucent non-reflex approach and Sigma's hi-dense Fovean sensor. Some of the interesting stuff wont show until next year to be tested.
As a note on the X100's lens/sensor possible qualities, a single focal length lens matched to a sensor with matched/taylored off-set microlenses has very good chances of showing outstanding performance. Now, if the AA filter is minimal or moved to the coatings on the lense elements, things will get more interesting. So, we'll have a small impractical unit capable of outperforming other cameras withing a narrow user range. If the lens renders nicely, in spite of the generous DOF, it will attract a following.
I kept all my empty Leica boxes, because I heard that selling "in-box" was better........
I am tempted to get the M9Ti and just keep it in the sealed box.........fortunately I could do neither, so I wont even try.......
