Ah but that is, technically, distortion-free as all you are seeing is the effect of the perspective in the cylindrical panorama view. There is no 'normal view here because it's more than 180 degrees. A 'normal' lens can't see behind itself

But you could zoom into a segment of the pano and normalise it given the right tools!

Sorry, you're going to have this filing rejected.
I filed for the same thing at the World Patent Commission for pretty much exactly the same thing, strangely enough, exactly a year ago to the very day. Mine is approaching test status, and we hope to have samples by this time next year.

What a surprising and exciting news this must be! Hope that the same technology can be also applied to 360 degree fisheye soon.

Just a small coincidence but following surprising & unexpected annoucements were also made on this very day. source: digitalcamera.jp

"Cannon" announced that EOS-1D Mark V is under intensive development. This has an APS-H cmos sensor and 32GB buffer memory which enables it to take 450 RAW shots continuously.
30 fps. A pericle mirror version is also available but made to order only.
Actual lauch would be in 2011 and expected to be sold at astonishingly low price of 2.5 million yen (25K US dollars). see pic#1.

"Nickon" immediately responded to this "Cannon" teaser and held an emergency press meeting. "Nickon's" amazing counter-proposal is Nickon F7 - yes, not D7.
They say digital era is over and now the genuinely trendy camera is this F7. - back to good & old film days. They accept pre-order from July 25. Price also at 2.5 mil. yen (25K us $).

"Honya", now very active upward going corporation, intervened between the Big 2, as was expected, saying 135 type 35mm camera days have been almost over.
From now on, MF is the real main stream camera and anybody who buy EOS 1D Mark V or Nikon F7 will deeply regret their stupid decisions soon after they see this Honya 645D Japan - painted by schick lacquer.
This is a limited model and to be manufactured for only 250 units globally. pic #3. A nice color imho. Ok, special discount at 1.5 mil. yen or 15K us $.

Although Ian is keeping silent due to NDA, "Olly" presented Pen PL2 (pic #4) and "Pammy" , well I forgot what it was, anyway see pic#5. These two are no more cooperating but apparently trying to kill each other.

There were more revolutionary and abnormal /inane announcements on this day but i want to keep them secret as I suspect that some of you might want to serach for themselves.

yoshi - a secret member of RAW-fish-eating society

p.s. deeply regret I can not attach pics on this board.

The RAW Fish Systems (thanks, Yoshi!) version already does that. It's called the piranha feature, and it's not quite ready for prime time. It does the feet perfectly, but then somehow does the rest of the photographer as well. We lost a couple of testers before we sent it back to the tank.

Thanks everyone for joining in the spirit of April Fools days

My story was an April Fools, but the idea at the heart of it is quite serious and one I have mentioned on various forums for a good few years.

I think some of the responses here in this thread were actually more imaginative though!
