  • Is Compact Flash on the way out?

Here is a summary or excerpt from an article that has just been published on DPNow:

Manisha Sharma, Director of Product Marketing at Lexar, one of the biggest suppliers of Compct Flash memory cards, flies the flag for Compact Flash even though she accepts that SD cards dominate the consumer and low-end DSLR camera categories.

You have been very busy of late Ian. Thanks for all the recent items you have published.

This one is the most interesting so far for me. I don't know why but I feel more comfortable with CF. I'm not sure whether it is its physical size or whether it is more safe from the point of view the terminals are hidden. I'm not too bothered about write speed as I have not noticed much difference between the various systems employed with whatever camera I am using. Hope that makes some sense.

    Thanks again for your efforts.

    Regards. Barr1e

I personally feel much more confident handling CF cards than SD cards, and I have had a couple of SD card suffer physical damage (making them unreadable). This has never happened to a CF card, although over the years I have had data corruption on one or two cards.

I have several SD cards (including one that I was lucky enough to win through the Salon competition), and was disappointed to find that when I purchased my Nikon D300, it takes CF cards instead. So now I have a pile of SD cards that I can only use in my compact camera, and have had to purchase more cards.

The D300s, I believe, has dual slots, and can take either format.

As long as we don't have to use micro SD, I'm not that bothered. I tried a Micro SD in my Olympus mju1030SW, by way of an adapter that fits the MSD into an XD card. While it worked very well and gave me a bigger capacity (not that I'd ever need it), when it came to getting it out, that's where the problems start.

Like many "Old" people, my fingers don't work as well as they did and being a bloke I don't have nails, that are of any use, so getting something a quarter the size of postage stamp out of the camera/adaptor was "fun" to say the least

SO: Yes! Size Matters and I do prefer something that I can handle easily

Re: Is Compact Flash on the way out?

Having bought the 550D Ian refers to in his article last week, I've suddenly found myself with a surfeit of CF cards and a dire shortage of SD cards.

I haven't noticed a great deal of difference in image writing speed to the card, but there again I knew that I'd only got a couple of fairly basic CF cards.

On the SD card side, I'd already got a variety of sizes and speeds for the my compact but know that I need to get more (and faster) pretty quickly - a 1GB card doesn't last long with an 18MP sensor when you're taking in RAW!

My current favourite (until I get time to go shopping) is a Sandisk 4gb SDHC card - it comfortably held over 50 images and 3 short HD videos on a recent trip to Anglesey Abbey.

I'm lucky in that I do have small hands, but I'm also looking for a good SD card holder because I can see that losing them might be a problem.

Hope it's not .... I've got a 40D and a 400D, both take CF cards ... I've got a healthy supply of around 15 cards, but you never know

I had two 'pack up in one week !!
