  • Garden Visitor

I have over the years seen many excellent shots of garden birds on the DP-Now forum, I have rarely had any photo's of quality or special interest to post myself until now. Perhaps not of quality but certainly of interest.

We have a large variety of visitors to our garden but for the last two day this fellow has appeared, not I think your usual garden visitor.

This Sparrow Hawk I believe to be a juvenile the feather are still rough.
We are looking forward to seeing it again, although naturally enough all the other small birds disappear when its around.

That's very nice, almost tempted to say it's cute ... if y'know what I mean. Lovely shot!!

We're spending much of today outside in the garden watching the birds and wildlife. Just watching, not taking any pics. Not seen anything like you're Sparrow Hawk though. The most interesting we've had so far today is a pair of Woodpeckers.

It's perishing cold so we're wrapped up in hoodies with cosy sleeping bags + hot water bottles as we stretch out on the benches.

Possibly the reason I rarely get any descant photos of the garden birds like yours, is a lack of your patience.
I don't envy you out in the cold, although you would appear to have it all well sorted. I do however envy your woodpeckers we have only ever seen two over the years.

Naah ... I don't have the patience either these days. which is why I tend to watch more rather than take pics. The garden is also north facing and shaded so the light is very poor in Winter. I'm only going out there and making myself reasonably warm and comfortable because I'm going 'stir-crazy' stuck indoors with this relentless, freezing cold Winter. We can't get out and about anywhere at the moment - even had the camper hemmed into the cul-de-sac for a few days recently whilst the Gas Board laid new mains pipes.

The Woodpeckers visit quite regularly. They like the peanut feeders but tend to hide behind them They also go to the old branches on an Oak Tree just the other side of our fence - but it's too high up for pics. We also have Magpies coming down this year. They usually just stay in the trees so it's nice to watch them land and feed here occasionally. We're also getting a few badgers overnight as well as one or two daytime foxes.

i think your doing yourself a misjudgement by your comments Patrick!
I believe many of your shots are excellent, and especially this one.

          Superb shot.

I know many will disagree (as they can be a little viscious to the other birdies!), but, your lucky to have these visiting you. I would love to see them in my garden.

Thank you both for your kind comments, but you didn't see the number of shots to get this one. The first visit I shot through the double glazing, poor results all scraped. the second visit I opened the window, much better. I then went carefully outside and got closer, this was when I got this shot.
Then I got too close for its comfort and it flew off.

                    Jocelyn,

The mouse-over is an inbuilt function of the forum software. It happens for any image that's 'attached' to a forum posting rather than being linked from the gallery.

If you'd like to experiment you can play about in the user test forum. Start a new thread there and try it for yourself.
The test forum is at http://dpnow.com/forum2/forumdisplay.php?f=29

                    Hope that helps

Yes Pol but 'exactly' how does one attach a picture for the effect to work. I have looked at the test forum and tried doing a post then clicking on 'Insert image' icon and all that happens is that another little window opens with a text entry line which has 'http/' highlighted, which seems to suggest the image must be hosted 'somewhere' on a website. Either that or am I completely off track on this one. Can someone please explain exactly how its done for a 'thicky' like me. !!

Dennis, I have to be honest and say I prefer to see photos in the body of a post rather than as attachments. Attachments IMHO are for those who do not have photos in the gallery. However, in the reply/quote dialogue, scroll down to Additional Options and you will see Manage attachments. Click on this and a pop up window appears where you can browse and upload your photo straight off your computer

                          Re: Garden Visitor

Dennis - don't call yerself a thicky! We can all have 'senior moments' so that's ok!!

As Stephen says - you need to scroll down the reply window and look for the "Manage Attachments" button. Click on that and a window will open so you then click on the browse button in that window. That'll open a navigation widow to your PC and you simply find the image you want to attach, open it and it'll upload as an attachment.

One important point to mention - some boards allow users to remove/delete their own attachments from their user CP panel. This does NOT apply here in DPN. Once you've attached an image to a forum posting you can't remove or delete it yourself. It can only be removed by an admistrator or one of the moderators. So please bear that in mind if considering attaching images rather than linking them from your gallery.

Screenshot attached showing the 'Manage Attachment window and the 'browse' window that opens when you activate it.
