  • Oly C8080 vs latest Oly DSRL

    I own several Olys. C8080, C510 and E30.
I would like to know if someone has comparative data about only image quality between the C8080 and newer DSRL Oly models.
When C8080 appeared, all the tests reviews where impressed for its RAW and JPEG image quality. Of course I am talking on settings, let us say, between 100 and 200 ASA. No other modern Olys have 50 or 80 ASA.
    Thank you all...Horacio

Although the C-8080WZ had a relatively large CCD sensor for a compact camera, a 2/3rds inch size, that sensor is still only a quarter of the area of a Four Thirds DSLR sensor. Olympus has also improved the TruePic image processor a great deal since 2003, when the C-8080WZ first came out. But the C-8080WZ sensor is twice the area of the sensor in a Canon G9, for example (43sq mm (G9) compared to about 97sq mm (C-8080WZ)), and it has only two thirds the number of pixels, so the C-8080WZ sensor ought to be more sensitive and less noisy. Canon has extremely good image processing, though.

Re: Oly C8080 vs latest Oly DSRL

I often use my C-8080 out of choice, as it has features and capabilities that the E-Series hasn't got...

Multi-Spot Metering. I keep banging on about this, and have never had a good reason why the E-Series hasn't got it. It was brilliant when they brought it out on the OM4 and works just as well on the C-8080. (If Olympus ever read these posts, please put this on the E-Next )

The C-8080 will do Flash Sync up to 1/8000th of a second, with most flash guns, not just the Olympus guns in Super Flash Mode. I often use a T-20 and 1/1000s @ f/8 works really well giving lots of DOF.

Having the rear screen flip up to provide a waist level finder is absolutly brilliant for candid and street photography, and being virtually silent, is a big bonus.

EVF - love it or hate it, you don't get green spots shooting sunsets through an EVF and when it dark the EVF enhance the available light to aid composition. Arguably viewfinders are only there to compose anyway so why do you need the clarity of an OVF

IQ is Very Good even by todays standards and its DIWA Platinum Award (along with all the others http://www.olympus.co.uk/consumer/29...oom_Awards.htm) was fully justified.

Like all cameras, when understood and used correctly it produces excellent images. I also believe it has a greater forgiveness of operator error than the E-Series as I get more "keepers" when using it for grab shots, than I do with the DSLRs.

I agree with you on all your comments. But more than that, I was pointing to discuss the fact oe differences of printed photos. I have printed pictures in a Canon i9900 with A+ size paer (photo pro super glossy from Canon) from both my C8080 and my E30 and I do not perceive a great deal of difference between them in that size, after processng with PShop. That is in the end the reason for my questioning: what about real comparative IQ?
