Does anyone have any experience of this, or of distance learning in general? I'm seriously looking into it, just because I love photography and I enjoy studying, so the two seem to go well together!
However, it's not cheap, so I want to be sure before I go ahead.
Never done anything like this so can't help I am afraid.
Do you have a link to the course?
Just been doing a little Googaling, the link is http://www.oca-uk.com/about/ba-hons-in-creative-arts and it would appear to be run in association with Bucks New University http://bucks.ac.uk/ and supported by the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation http://www.esmeefairbairn.org.uk/ and the Royal Photographic Society http://www.rps.org/.
I know nothing about Buck new University or the Esmee Fairbain Foundation, but the Royal Photographic Society is a well known and established organisation running its own educational schemes and letters.
Check out open university http://www.open.ac.uk/ there could well be something for you there as well.

Thanks Patrick! Apologies for not posting the links last night.
I've checked the OU, and the only photography courses they do are short courses. As far as I can find out, the OCA are the only ones offering a full distance learning photography-related Degree.
I've already completed a Degree and postgrad qualification in a different subject, I'm hoping that one or two of the modules will be eligible for credit transfer, or that I'll be able to submit a portfolio, enabling me to start studying at Level 2 - but I may be being too hopeful about that, I'm not sure!
Re: Open College of Arts - BA Creative Arts Degree
Hi,
I have just finished a Maths degree (results pending) with the OU. I also did the OU's photography course. I am in the middle of a photography and studio course with the local college. http://dpnow.com/forum2/blog.php?u=5 see my blog for what has been covered so far.
The maths courses were fine for distance learning, the OU has very good course books and tutors on hand. You can also go to tutorials and join forums. You can get credit transfers for previous courses. The photo course is good for beginners. Unfortunately they don't offer anything yet for the next stage. There is a forum if you want photos critiqued but I preferred getting my comments from DPNow forum.
The college photography course is very detailed and moves fast (it is an advanced course) but no critiquing unless you particularly ask. Studio work next week, which is new for me. But I am chatting to the others there.
I have looked at the Open College course but looked away when I saw the price! I think it depends on what you want and how you study. If you are ok on your own with support and advice from a distance (and you can afford it) go for it. Check out the local colleges too. The studio facilities at my local college are very good.
Re: Open College of Arts - BA Creative Arts Degree
I had a long chat with one of the tutors at 'Art in Action' this summer. He did impress me with the content of the course and course materials which were availble to inspect and he was able to reassure me that it wasn't too art farty (his term).
In the end I decided that money was better spent elsewhere but I think it is a well structured course

That's good to hear. The course structure seems good from the sample documents I've seen.
There's no doubt that I should be spending the money on more mudane things, such as a carpet for the bedroom, etc., but I really like the idea of doing this Degree.
Re: Open College of Arts - BA Creative Arts Degree
How is the OCA course going. I am toying with the idea of it or alternatively going for a RPS distinction just to give me some objective in my photography. I can't imageine that I will complete a degree, it would serve no purpose except self satisfaction and is rather more than I want to spend.
Re: Open College of Arts - BA Creative Arts Degree
I heard back from them just before Christmas to say that they had accepted the portfolio I sent them as evidence of 'prior experiential learning'. They've given me credits for four modules, meaning that I only have to complete three modules to finish the degree, so I'm pretty chuffed.
I haven't actually enrolled yet, I'm waiting until I get paid at the end of the month. My only purpose for doing it is self satisfaction, to be honest! It's expensive, but it's something I know I'll love doing. I'll report back once I've started the course if you like!

Just an update on this - I finally enrolled on this course last week (I've been waiting until I could afford it!). The course materials for the first module I'm studying came through today, and at first glance, I'm really impressed. They're presented nicely, easy to read and the first few assignments look interesting and useful.
Now I have to prepare a student profile to send to my tutor!

I'm very interested to hear about your progress with this
How long will the three remaining modules take you to complete?

As far as I understand, you are allowed up to two years to complete each module. I'm hoping to complete the current one within nine months, but that will depend upon how hard I find it to study with a toddler running around the house!
I'm a bit concerned that I'll be at a disadvantage, as I'm a Level 2 student, but am not familiar with the format required for the assignments, logbook, etc., but hopefully this will all become clear within time.
