  • **Urgent Advice RQD** P&S Camera Advice

    Hi All,

Well, isnt it always the way! I am on holiday next week, and the law of sod strikes, our very trusty and very old Canon Powershot A75 has given up the ghost!
As such, I need a cheap (sub 100quid) pointy shooty to take away with us.

Although I will be taking the SLR, sometimes you just need something in your pocket.

I was toying with the idea of [ame="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-ES15-Digital-Camera-Optical/dp/B001UE8AWU/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1251042369&sr =1-2"]THIS[/ame] Samsung, however, it doesnt come with a viewfinder, and the optimist in me says that the weather will be bright and sunny in Kent next week, so this could prove problematic.

If anyone has any advice for a good all rounder, with a view finder, and video capability like the Samsung, please let me know asap, as I need to get ordering!

    Cheers all!
    Ben

Ben if you get stuck I have a brand new Canon A1100 IS you can use if you want. Shouldn't be a problem getting it to you in Kent as I can nip over on my motorbike to you.

well, thats a very very kind offer ekkle! The reason my last one broke is my daughter, as such, I wouldnt want to put someone elses tech in the firing line, so I shall decline your offer. But thanks so much for your generosity.

might i suggest looking at the compare option on dpreview?

was looking for a new underwater p&s, but wanted higher quality video. used dprev to find what i wanted, but the price of the housing put me off.

i've always got on well with fuji's, the f30 produces great images and isn't too slow.

                  cost?

presumably they're saving on having to include zooming optics when the vast majority of P&S users probably compose (loosely used term ) and shoot using the telly on the back. if the viewfinder is electronic, again, you're adding extra cost with a (perhaps) less required/used feature to a product that's in a very competitive market.

My G3 has a viewfinder but I never use it as it's too small and rather useless compared to the LCD screen

There's no viewfinder on my Leica C-Lux 2 but I manage without it, even on very bright days. Granted I may sometimes need to shield the screen on the odd occasion but I usually manage ok - even when recording short movie clips.

One fella on another board mentioned he sometimes uses a loo roll centre to shade his LCD screen. I've never tried that myself yet though.

                      Ben,

These Kaiser LCD shades look as though they might be useful where there's no viewfinder.

Apparently they attach to the camera tripod socket - so there's no adhesive involved.

It's cost and the fact that LCDs are bigger and better than they used to be. Parallax is a problem with viewfinders on compacts too. Even expensive compacts with viewfinders have issues.

Ian, have you ever had an opportunity to try one of those Kaiser LCD shades?

I'm tempted to grab one and keep it handy in the Leica bag, though I wouldn't want it attached permanently.

One of the things I looked for when I bought my Canon G9 was the viewfinder. However as things have turned out I never use it. In truth its only an 80% view which suffers from parallax a bit on closeups and the lens obscuring part of the view. It does zoom though. The fact is though that it has no info in the viewfinder, its all on the screen, so you end up not using the VF

Would you consider a refurb? There is a Panasonic Lumix FX10 available on Amazon - I have added it to the DPNow Amazon Shop under compact cameras (page 2):
