I think a sheet of paper white paper is very handy. I have used a sheet of paper as a flash diffuser, a custom white balance target, and a white infinity background for product shots. How about that for value for money and versatility. Heck, you could even write on it if you wanted to!

point your flash straight up, wrap your piece of paper around the sides and back side, fasten it down with a rubber band and you can do bounce light outdoors at night.

Yup - done that

Even used a curved sheet of paper to diffuse the light from a built in flash - both on a DSLR and a compact camera.

My best bit of kit is a bean bag which is light as a feather and err.... my bra ... yes folks, it's got a gap in the front (cleavage boys LOL!) where I store my lens cap!

i lecture at the university in the evenings. here is a handout on creating a gadget bag written for students on a budget. maybe someone here will find something useful.

Tons of stuff already been covered but I did make myself a couple of nifty deffusers.
Just cut up a white hankey to size, folded it and stitched it up so it formed a small hood for the flash. I have one for the built in flash and one a bit bigger for the off camera flash unit. They live in one of the small pockets in my body warmer.

Lots of fun tips here, thanks, and I'll add a couple.
Lens: The least expensive 4/3rds lens may be the 35mm f/3.5 and it is a gem.
Flash Diffuser for the On-board flash on most DSLRs:

made from a plastic bottle, can be slipped over the camera strap when not in use.
Camera cushion: a small piece of wet suit foam material, not as stable as a bean bag, but good for reducing chances of scratching surfaces and camera. Also good for cushioning things in bag.

In view of the present weather this is my current favourite gadget. Not free, because I bought a spare lens hood, cut and attached a large plastic bag, and now I can take pictures under the rain without worrying.
This one is large enough to use all the controls easily, very quick to install and remove, and is always in my bag, but if necessary you could also fit a large enough bag to keep your head dry

Head inside a plastic bag Is there a line of H&S people forming up outside your house...

I had one in my old film camera bag for years and when I took it out a little while back it had gone funny and started to degrade (bit like me )

Good tip, DIY is so satisfying when it works as well as these do and saves you money.

I always keep a plastic shower cap handy as they are so easy to slip over the camera if on a boat trip or if it starts to rain. The elastic just springs around the camera and keeps it dry.

I am talking about the free ones you get from hotels or cruise ships when on holiday.
