What settings are best for taking shots of fireworks? I realise that a tripod will come in handy - any help would be greatfully received as this is a little out of my comfort zone. Using a Canon 400D.
Hi Gina, Ian posted this sometime back http://dpnow.com/1302.html
Post up what you take? I will do the same tomorrow
Looking back, that article didn't cover exposure very well. Looking at my best fireworks shots, you really need a shutter speed of around 2 seconds an I found that an aperture of f/11 preserved the brightness of the trails without bleaching out the colour. This is at ISO 100.
A tripod would be very advisable as long as there isn't a crowd of people who might bump into it.
You who dwell in the UK are lucky to have dark nights for the 5th November fireworks. Here in France the best ones are on July 14th so we usually have to wait until midnight for them to start, and after hanging around in bars for a few hours apertures don't seem very important!
Here are a couple I took this year in Camaret.

I took 92 pics this evening whilst out with freinds and family. Unfortunately as I was the lighter of fireworks, I didn't really get much time with the camera. I was lighting the things then running back to where my camera was and taking a few quick pics as they went off. Couldn't get any rockets at all as my tri-pod doesn't point straight up and I didn't have much time anyway to be honest. Going out with just the 100mm prime lens on didn't help either!!
Anyhow, one of the best I actually took was in the house testing the settings with a sparkler! Here it is and I am not brave enough to show any more from earlier on!!
