  • Ansal Adams

Just visited Walsall Art Gallery (West Midlands), where we are fortunate enough to have an exhibition of Ansal Adams work. Its the first time I have had the opportunity of seeing any Adams prints for real, only published images in book form.
What a pleasure to see such wonderful photographs, the quality just sings.
I have heard it said his work to be technically perfect but lacks soul.
    Personally I loved the exhibition.

Running along side this is another exhibition from John Davies mainly industrial & post industrial landscape a complete contrast to Ansel Adams. Inspired me I must say.

      OK,OK, I put a A instead of an E

The pictures are still great, and achievement for a small town like Walsall to get such an exhibition. It is off to Norway when it finishes in Walsall the 31st August.

Well worth the effort in my opinion.

Not a great fan – but he was a great craftsman – read his autobiography a couple of months back.

Large Format sheet film, only a few negatives. The image quality of Ansel Adams is still supreme. I studied the zone system and tried to emulate with no success. Spent hours in the darkroom printing 20"X16" prints
The older I get the better I used to be!

Yes I to studied the Zone system and did the film and print tests to check the accuracy of the camera & film, using an old Bronica Single lens Reflex camera, a beautiful thing with a shutter like a gun shot, and as much recoil.

I did improve quality and the negatives were easier to print, but were never a match for Ansel Adams (spelt it right this time) images.

One interesting snippit from his autobiography was how much he used 35mm (Contarex) and did what amounted to commercial reportage for conservation work. Certainly he defined almost his own genre of photography even as I said it does nowt for me.
