Re: Advice on the Rico GX100

Hi Patrick, some thoughts of mine. As you know I've had the G9 since May and have expressed my feelings on it before here in the Compact Digicam forum. I have not seen or handled the Ricoh, however with a little research, which was interesting, it seems the thing that lets it down is the amount of noise at anything over ISO80. I think this would put me off frankly, but you will need to see some results to make your own mind up. The add on viewfinder makes an already not so pretty camera look even worse IMHO Also it makes the pop up flash useless from what I can tell.

If I was in the market for such a camera I think I would definitely wait a while and see some tests on the Panasonic Lumix LX3 which has recently been announced. On the face of it it seems it may be the one to go for, though some tests need to be seen as I say. What potentially lets it down is a complete lack of a viewfinder. However, this was high on my list of needs when I bought the G9, but now I find myself rarely using it as the screen is so good, also it only shows 80% of the field of view which is a tad disconcerting

The Ricoh seems to have a lot going for it, though it seems you have to work at it to get the best from it, and the reports of high noise levels would worry me. As always though you need to handle and use one ideally, or at the very least see some test results. DPReview has done a test on it, no doubt you have already seen it.

      Hi Stephen

I am in the middle of reading a report "PhotographyBlog" and downloaded some RAW DNG images. They look quite good at 100 ISO.

So far I'm concerned about using the RAW mode 6 sec write time very slow (what is the G9)

The attraction is the add on viewfinder which I think (rather superficially) makes the camera look serious and can be used at 90 degrees
I hate using LCD screens so the camera of choice has got to have a viewfinder, this cuts out the Lumix just wont consider it. Anyway its only a 24mm equivalent lens, with my style I tend to want to be closer than that, so some Zoom is required.

If the Ricoh doesn't fit the bill its got to be the G9.

I see your POV Patrick. The G9 seems to have a write time of around 1sec, maybe 1.5, but it will shoot continuously at that rate with no buffer filling up. The G9 lens is about 35mm equiv and has a 6x zoom so in that respect it may suit you better

I have now read a number of reviews, and they are such a mixed bunch its difficult to decide which to accept.

Collectively they all tell me what I want to hear, excluding the write time for RAW which varies from 3 to 6 seconds.
Individually they all praise or criticise the same individual features.

All but one praise picture quality up to 200ISO, other up to 400IS0, then they all agree above 400 as being noisy. This tends to be the case with all compacts anyway. The downloaded images available look great, but they always do don't they?
Its in many ways a quirky camera and it still appeals to my own quirky nature.

Got to try one at least before dismissing it.
