Anyone here use or own a monopod?
If so have you any thoughts on a best buy/model? Need it to offer support to a pretty hefty camera lens combination, so nothing too flimsy.
I've got a Manfrotto 334B monopod , it's got a trigger to extend the leg so it's fairly easy to adjust to whatever height you want .
I've used it with Nikon D1X + Sigma 50-500 lense , (you mount the lense not the camera) and got some decent shots in low light @500mm.
I did have a Benbo monopod for a number of years. I sold it when I sold my Benbo tripod. To be honest I rarely used either, but I didn't own any long lenses and couldn't get used to the tripods unique adjustibility.
Thanks both, I'm kinda leaning towards a Manfrotto 681 at the moment, though am willing to be convinced about a Magfibre version or the Neotec one.
I've had a cheapo Velbon for years and never used it, however I'm now finding that with the camera and 70-200 f2,8 non IS lens a monopod would be ideal for extra stability.
BB I don't seem to be able to find the 334B listed with the usual suspects, though it does seem that camera/lens attachment would not be ideal, preferring a QR plate.

I can recommend Manfrotto as their after sales service is excellent, I have 190 tripod a few years old now, with the wing nut type adjuster on the legs which I am finding difficult as I get older to tighten properly. They are supplying me at a very reasonable cost and thus economical rather than buying a new one, the new type of flip adjusters to fit the old tripod.
Hi Stephen,
IMHO a good QR plate and a ballhead are what you surely need whether for a monopod or a tripod.
yoshi
A QR plate yes, though not too sure about a ballhead, I have one but in the end returned to a 3 way pan & tilt. On a monopod though a ball head could be a bit tricky, I've been looking at at 234RC head.
Thanks B, I like the principle of this monopod, and have looked at the Manfrotto Neotec model, which has a similar system or at least a variation on it. However I'm not too sure about the head and the fact it is simply a screw into tripod bush variety. I wonder if the QR variety would be easier and the 234 RC head would satisfy that need

I have just bought a manfrotto (for the wolf day) and am getting on really well with it. I dont remember what model it is, but I suspect you would need something a little more hefty.
I found it much easier to get those steady shots.
I beleive manforotto also do a model with pop out feet, to make a tripod.

Thanks for that Ben, yes there is one with the pop out feet, think its the 682. However my feeling is they are more for just allowing the monopod to stand up when you let go of it rather than to offer further support in use. It seems this model is also heavier and that can be an important consideration, and the reason I may consider a magfibre model
I've used the Velbon with ball head for a couple of years, and have been using monopods for about 8 years now whenever I travel. I'd suggest you work for a while with the one you have and make sure that a monopod is really what you want. There are indeed advantages (be sure to get some form of QR bracket), but some limitations, too. It is possible you might really prefer to pay the weight penalty for a tripod, depending on exactly what you are trying to shoot and in what conditions. As I sit here, I see 4 monopods in the corner, and each one has unique positive and negative attributes. But do some fair amount of shooting with whatever you have before investing any substantial sum in another monopod. FWIW
Did the deed today and was seduced by the Manfrotto Neotec 685B Monopod. Cost twice as much as a regular one but what the hell, its such a brilliang design concept it was a no brainer in the end. A lovely piece of kit. I've a good mind to flog my 055ProB on Ebay and get a Neotec tripod
Just by way of an update on this monopod. I used it for the first time today on a job. All photography was in a large auditorium of speakers at a lectern. Used a 70-200 with 1.4x extender. Mostly around ISO 1600. The monopod performed brilliantly, I wish I had been able to use one of these Neotec versions years ago. It was so much easier and quicker to use than the regular type, and of course allowed me to keep the camera/lens combination much steadier at speeds around 1/60s
