  • does anyone remember...

...the thread posted by a member here that introduced software/website that allowed you to track an outing with a GPS unit then post that route, with an occasional camera icon, on the internet? the idea was to view the route and click on the icons to see an image taken from the exact location shown on the map.

i've searched but can't seem to find it. any help would be appreciated.

I don't.... but only discovered in Elements last night that I could GPS locate my images. Don't know if that's any help!

Ah but then I'd have to publish my location....

Or perhaps I'm missing the point!

I have a vague recollection of the thread you mention but I'm not so sure it was here in DPnow. I think it might have been on another board I once used but I don't often go there now. I'll do another search and then get back to you if I can find it.

Did you try googling with 'Photo GPS software' as your search phrase? That throws up a list of possibles.

I remember something about this, but if or not on this site I couldn't say it may have been a discussion at the photo club.
Anyway the devise as I remember is produced by Sony. I think it tracks were you are at any given time, and after downloading your pictures you down load the GPS data and it synchronises with the images by time thus pinpointing where a picture was taken.
It has been said that some future cameras will have this built in, in fact is it the new Hasselblad that already has?

                  Re: does anyone remember...

Oddly enough, I have just completed an article for What Digital Camera on geo-tagging services and products for photographers.

I think the product Jon needs is the Sony GPS-CS1. There is a news story from a couple of years ago here:

I have used one for a while and it seems to work OK.

I was looking at this idea as it seems the only time i take any pictures is when I'm on holiday. Some ideas here...

thanks to all who responded with their ideas.
this method is intriguing and would be most helpful for my current project. i was hoping to utilize my garmin 60csx with my d70s. i will continue to peruse this thread and offered links for guidance.

                      thanks again!

Hi Jon, you can still use your Garmin as long as it can record an NMEA standard log file. You then just need some software than can dig out the positioning coordinates at a given time. Then you can edit the exif metadata of relevant images taken at the same time.

You could also upload your photos to Flickr and use a third party site called GPSTagr (http://gpstagr.jianing.net/) to automatically tag your images on Flilckr using a GPS log file.

But I'm not aware of any solution that can automatically geo-tag your shots in the camera in real time.
