  • Dregs of Society

Stephen's photo of the wheelie bins cluttering the place reminded me of another of my own pictures representing 'the dregs of society' - from my 'human remains' folder. By that I mean those people who scatter litter instead of using a bin, or even scatter the refuse from the bins!

Here's one I spotted recently. The 'secret drinker' had decided to try to hide his garbage. The bright sunlight was falling directly onto the bottle, which is why I happened to spot it. I felt it demonstrated there was at least some beauty, pride and dignity remaining in the subject despite being rejected and dumped and apparently 'hidden' in a bush by a footpath.

I'm with you all the way on that one, really gets my goat when I see litter all over the place, one of my most hated is people who throw it out the car window, what's wrong with taking it home and popping it in the bin. Another is people dumping large amounts in the middle of the road in the lanes, one day I will get a shot of someone in the act.

There's no excuse for any of it!

Why not try to capture your anger, or maybe your disgust. See the litter, look beyond it and try to take a shot, or shots, that suggest some sort of story behind it - maybe some suggestion of the person who left it, maybe some sort of interpretation centred around the article itself. It all tells some sort of story - a reflection of our times - man's presence on the planet.

That particular discarded water bottle had its moment of glory, took centre stage in the main spotlight (the sun) - then it was carefully removed and put into a litter bin. I don't disturb items in the sand or washed up with the tide though, unless they're sharp/dangerous (eg broken glass).

Good on ya - you'll be surprised what you'll find and where you find it. I've found various interesting things even in hedges or borders of carparks of the likes of Burger King or other motorway service stations.

I remember a program that followed the people who tidy up the central reservations on the motorways, they found items such as bottles full of liquid human waste, toys (adult), cd''s tapes etc, quite interesting to see what things people throw either in littering or during a row.

Don't know how you do it Pol but you seem to able to turn any old bit of rubbish into a eye catching photograph.
When I try this it turns out to be just what it is...rubbish

Aggh, an absolute pet hate of mine Pol!

I hate littering! This is why I loved Germany so much when I went there, no rubbish.

Not to mention the harm it does to the wildlife.

I will pop down to our local pond on sunday and take a picture of it. The lesser spotted shopping trolley, the great crested crisp packet.....agh!
