  • Going to the Lake District....

....for a week with 'er indoors but not until the 1st week of June.

Going to do a bit of walking, possibly a spot of mountain biking* and definitely, of course, some photography.

As we only have the one week and I've not been there before, I'm doing some research on photographic locations before I go, so if anyone has any favourite areas or vantage points they'd like to share, then I'd be pleased to hear from them. We're staying in a cottage in Ambleside and I'm wondering if it's worth a day out to either the Yorkshire Dales National Park or over the wall to the Galloway Forest Park (bit of a trek but I'd be able to get some shots on the way of Hadrian's wall if any remnants are visible close to the M6 / A74M?)

*I Went out on the MTB yesterday for the first time for quite a while and, boy, do my legs ache today! Standing up is also preferable to sitting at the moment but that will get better with regular riding . If there was a competition for walking like John Wayne I'd be in with a chance I reckon .

I don't think you will be short of places to go, or walks to do in a week Stuart. I'd forget going further afield. There are loads of sites showing Lakeland scenes so they will no doubt give you some ideas.

Ambleside at the head of Windermere is pretty central and you will be able to get to places sooner than the trippers and therefore be able to get a parking spot where you can then head off away from the bustle of some of the honeypots. That said some are really worth visiting. Places like Hawkshead and Tarn Hows are old favourites and if you hit Keswick when there is a market on, its adds lots of local colour, then head off up Borrowdale and branch off to go up to Watendlath, definitely one of my favourite spots. On the way up stop at Suprise View after going over the chocolate box Ashness Bridge,

These two shots are at Watendlath

Or, just out of Keswick visit Castlerigg an ancient stone circle, best done early morning or late evening as the sun goes down

From Ambleside though its easy to head off up Langdale where there is some spectacular scenery and the opportunity to double back up the narrow road towards Blea Tarn and Little Langdale. Perhaps visit Grasmere and have a walk round the Tarn. There really are loads of places to go and explore, you will love it.

Thanks Stephen, a good starter for 10. Just hope we have good weather as you obviously did!
