  • Printer profiling

    Dear All,

First, Merry Christmas. I have been away for weeks and havn't posted a thing So Hi.

Anyway I am considering getting my printer profiled. I regulary profile my monitor but prints from my epson (r1800) are always darker. So I thought i would try one of those online companies where you download then print a chart, send it to them and they send you the profile. Have tried everything else.

Can anyone recommend a good company?

    Thanks

    Josh

    Re: Printer profiling

Don't think I would bother with the online companies profiles myself.

Do you use Photoshop, and so use the paper profiles you already have when you installed the printer?

I use a Spyder to profile my monitor but that alone will make very little, or no difference to your final print.

I have an R1800 and have a perfect screen to print match (with crt) so, if you use photoshop I could give you all my settings to try first, if you like.

Sorry to contradict but I must take issue with you here.

Changing to another brand of paper using the same profile will give different results and often very different results, so your settings may very well be useless to someone else.
The make of printer, the paper brand the ink used and the computer itself all effect the final result. If you think its all standardized you are quite wrong.
Paper manufacturers provide profiles for their specific papers as downloads which can be very good, but custom profiles are best, this takes into account all the above mentioned variables.
To underline what I am saying a member of my photo club changed his graphics card and his prints changed, until new profiles were written. I myself need different profiles for the same printer used from different machines. Yes I can see a difference.
At the end of the day it depends on how critical the individual photographer is and what the prints are to be used for, I exhibit so accurate control of output is essential.

I have spent many hours, ink and paper experimenting and concluded a profile for each paper is the answer to accuracy.

All this is of course subject to an accurately profiles monitor, arguably the most single important profile used.

          Hi Josh

I don't know what papers you use, but both Permajet and Fotospeed (there are probably others as well) will write free custom profile for each of their own papers, and they both supply a big range from glossy through satin to art papers. Sample packs of paper are offered for sale by both companies, and are good quality suppliers. I personally favor Permajet.

            Hi

I use epson's own paper and at the moment have a "large" stock of it so will have to stick with that for now.

I have found this company. http://www.pureprofiles.com/

            Anyone know them?

            Thanks

I know all about the diferent paper thing and as Josh did'nt mention using another brand I assumed he was using Epson paper just as I do.
