Re: Just bought a new Gizmo

I use the RC-5 for my 400D at the moment, it is not great but this sounds ideal.

    Thanks for the tip!

Hi Stephen - Is it only capable of shutter release or are there any other functions of which it is capable.?

What did you have in mind Dennis?
Its functions are restricted by the 3 pin female plug that goes into the release socket on the side of the camera. Though there is a switch on the transmitter/sender that allows it to double as an LED torch, enough to allow you to see your camera in dark conditions.

Hi Stephen - I was perhaps thinking along the lines of being able to transmit pictures back to a laptop, for instance. What prompted the question was because yesterday on another forum for Pentax users I came across a link to a product on sale in USA for a 2GB SD card which is capable of sending it's contents wirelessly to a laptop. I will see if I can find the link if you are interested. Regards Dennis

Certainly Dennis, though I have seen something about such a product, possibly in one of the press releases published on this site, but which people whinge about from time to time

Unfortunately my Gizmo is only for firing the camera from a distance wirelessly. Canon and Nikon both produce a wireless transmitter for sending images, but they are somewhat prohibitive for the likes of me and completely unnecessary for my type of work

Dennis, when I was round at Stephen's on Thursday it appeared to be something of a one-trick pony, but on reading the instructions I learned that it could do household chores...........it wasn't long til we had it making coffees and even pizza. I understand that it's also pretty handy at painting fences...

              Only kidding

That's an IR jobbie, Pol - the one Stephen has is much more expensive - probably a radio jobbie...

                      Oh aye. Thanks for that.

Yours looks like very posh, very useful jobbie.

Definitely capable of Roast Beef and Yorkies.

Yup. He should be able to tune in to Radio 2 no bother on his.

Much to my surprise it looks fairly well made, came with batteries, was well packaged (with some amusing Chinglish on the back of the box ) and, the acid test, it works! The claimed max range is 100 metres which I suspect is assuming a clear line of sight. It certainly works at 30 metres in my garden.
Yes I've seen these on Ebay. Have to say I was put off by the dangly nature of the receiver and the aerial on the sender, it just ain't a cool bit of kit, even if it is cheap
