  • Trip to London

    Dear All,

I have a day off work. Who Hoo So tomorrow I am off to London. I intend to get there about 7.00am (waterloo) and then see what happens. Should be a fresh clear day .

I have decided to take a risk and travel light (ish). So I am leaving my tripod at home and instead will be using a gorillapod slr zoom thing. I have also detached my battery grip from the camera in an effort to be a bit more discreet. I have agonised over taking the 70-200mm F2.8 and decided that I will be taking it. Unfortunately this means taking the bigger backpack but I would hate to need it and not have it.

Anyway will let you know how it goes.

Oh BTW for any readers of Digital SLR User magazine I got a runner up position in their low light competition. Look out for my normal life name of Simon Jordan. The magazine came out today.

    Best Regards

    Josh

    Re: Trip to London

Josh you're very wise not taking a tripod , the police don't like them i'm being deadly serious , several photographer friends of mine have been given a very hard time just for carrying them and setting them up is a no-no .
For some good photography take a walk to Trafalgar SQ then down Whitehall to Westminster , from there you can go along the S Bank to Tower Bridge , back over the River and either Walk or take the U/Ground back .
Hundreds of good locations to be seen on both sides of the River .
Good luck , good shooting .

    B..

PS.. i've used the 70-200VR on London shoots , but a wide angle is better , i use the 18-200 for trips up there now .

yes lens choice is always hard as I hate carrying too much but want to ensure I'm ready for anything.

Tomorrow I will be taking a sigma 70-200mm F2.8, the canon 24-105mm L and the 17-40mmL. Not sure about the last one, but it doesn't add that much weight so why not.

        Best Regards

update. It is 6 am and I am on the train with a dodgy hot chic and a lot of hope for a good day shooting. Typing this with an apple iPhone which for all you gadget freaks out there is super. Saved up for it using one of those terrimundi jar things. (money box that you have to smash to open)

          See you later

right I'm back. I was in London from just gone 7.00 and stayed through to sunset. Blimey. Won't go on about it now cause it will take me a while to go through the pictures. However in answer to you question Peter. The iphone is superb. Well for me anyway, Let me explain using today as example journey into to town takes over an hour, I watch an episode of life on mars on my iphone. I then picked up my email and of course posted on this forum. Through the day I disrupted my team at work by emailing them photographs, (NB the Iphone cannot send MMS but can send emails with photos attached.)

After the first photo session in London I needed a hot chocolate so I opened google maps searched for starbucks and low and behold little red pins appeared in the map. I taped on the nearest one to me and it brought up the address / phone number etc. From there it was easy to navigate to a proper i.e. not dodgy hot chocolates with cream. Throughout the day I picked up my emails sent a few more photographs got a couple of phone calls I also surfed the net looking for rooftops that were open to the genreal public. (yes I know this should have been done before I wennt)and then on the way home watch an episode of spooks.

So inn summary, for me the Iphone works. truthfully there are other phones with better specs but none are as easy to use and none are so stylish. If you have an ipod and a phone you might as well get the iphone.

                Best Regards

Thanks for that. Will not say to much as it is off topic but I was told that it had trouble forwarding on texts. Must admit I fell in love with it when I saw the video of how it worked,

Now to look forward to the photos from around London.

Hi Josh, I don't know a lot about the iPhone, but I'm always a bit cautious about Apple kit. I have a few questions for you:

Does it have a memory card slot?

How good is battery life and can you change the battery yourself?

Does it have a GPS receiver built in?

I've heard the screen gets dirty quite quickly?

When do you think Apple will recall them because the battery dies prematurely

                    Ian

go to an O2 shop or a carphone wharehouse or even better a proper apple store. They have play tables set up with loads of phones.

                      Best Regards

                            Well where are the pics?
You certainly had some decent weather , by coincidence i was in the Capitol myself yesterday for work , wish i'd taken my camera .
The iphone looks good but i don't like being tied to one network , i've a ipod(80gb) and a mobile but for various reasons i'll keep them seperate for now , battery life is a problem Maplins do a cheap replacement plus tools for opening it up , but i have'nt needed it yet and it's nearly 2 years old now , also i would'nt fit in my Boshe home dock so i'd still have to use the pod .

                            B..
