Re: Quiet Forums and lack of interest.

Like others I have been on every day .............I am on holiday from work at the moment but Unlike others I'm not off on a cruise I have been decorating our hall, staircase, and landing.................mind you I have some really boring photos of that if you want to see so I havent really had time for photography. I hope those going to far away places have fun and return with some really good pictures to brighten our winter months

This is something I feel very wrongly about and have said so in the past.
DP now is trying to be to many things to few people. There are as you say too many sections most of which are a sort of duplication anyway, and could be rationalized. I just counted 19, some have not been used in weeks, they should simply go.
I think the site should focus on photography the discussion of photography and picture taking.
I would like to see more in depth discussion on members pictures, The new golden gallery might just help here.
Photo critique should fill this role but everyone is much to nice to say an image is rubbish because the reason this or that, or how good they think it is because this or that. Comments tends to be dressed up for fear of upsetting someone, or simply "thats a great picture".
We could perhaps even have discussions on some classic old photographs in a modern context, people giving reason as to why they appreciate them or not as the case may be.

In all honesty I don't see the need for equipment revues, this type of thing is covered fully by most magazines and countless specialist sites.

I think the site could also be made easier to use.

I did a bit of googling (other search engines are available) and searched for names well known to us, a very interesting and educational exercise.
can those who were once regulars let us know why the lack of input and interest? Is this normal for forums? other forums seem more lively at the moment.
I post on several forums and usually use the same moniker. I used to use my full name but, as you say, Google knows pretty much everything so I went for something a little more obscure.

I tend to post on DPNow more often than the others because I like the people on here but, like a lot of people I assume, I go through phases of regular posting and then stop for a while. It tends to depend on how busy I am at home and / or with other, non-photographic, interests.

Some of the forums that have a lot more members get a bit impersonal at times and posts quickly get "lost" in the crowd, it's a bit like posting an image on Photosig - it disappears off the front pages so quickly that you don't get that many critiques nowadays.

I don't really enjoy critiquing other people's work although I do occasionally and I try not to just say "nice picture" but sometimes that's all you can say - no point in coming up with a criticism just for the sake of it if the image doesn't warrant it and, if it's a genuinely good picture in your opinion, then I think you should at least tell the photographer you thought so.

Sometimes I want to say "that's a really naff picture, so awful that you really should erase it from your hard drive immediately" but I don't - such comments are rarely well received .

Just "Googled" my own moniker and I feel I should point out that there's a lot of activity out there that's nothing to do with me - especially on the "men's health" site

So, careful what we assume people!

Re: Quiet Forums and lack of interest.

This is the first chance that I have had to get back and post a reply, but know that there have been loads since this evening. So, I do apologise if I am repeating anything already said.

I started an MSN Group called REME Past & Present which was seven year old last months; below are some of the things that I have observed during that time:
                • Any site always has it's regular contributors and those who just pop in everynow and again, then you have the visitors and the member who we all the lurker
                • The input goes through spells of high activity and then lows, usually during the holiday periods which are different in the UK never mind the members that are dispersed around the four corners of the globe, as is the membership of REME Past & Present
I have loads of photos to post from the photographic course that I have just been on thanks to eBay and a couple of members of REME Past & Present who wish to remain nameless.

                  Tinka ,
Fall is harvest time for us! Many acres of soybeans to harvest! I just got out again last weekend to do some photography at a local park. Between harvest and trying to get my name out locally, it has been difficult for me to check in! Hopefully I will be able to check in a little more regularly. I will do my best to make more of an effort to check in more often!

eBay? That an easy one, I auctioned off things that I no longer use or have a need for and will be doing so again over the next few months to raise money, to buy photographic equipment I need for the project with Satmap.

If you're interested in doing a short course, you might find something suitable at one of your local FE colleges or perhaps a local Adult Education Centre.

It may also be worth your while doing a search and seeing what else might be going on locally.
