  • How did I live without it??

    I must have one!!

I wouldn't use one of these fitted to a camera with a long lens if there were any armed police about!

Looks useful, stuart. Do you have the Neotec monopod? I'm having second thoughts about getting this as it remains quite long when fully compressed. My ancient Cullman monopod has twist lock sections which are naff, so I will definitely replace it with a lever lock type, but one thing that has improved it immensely is the fitting of a beefier ball and socket head. the 90-250 lens I have at the moment is 3Kg and it felt much more secure with the new head.

No, I do have a Neotec tripod (which is very nice) but my monopod is an oldish Velbon (50.5 cm closed).

I use the monopod when the subject / location suits and I like the foam handle in the cold! I don't have a head on it at the moment but it works fine for static shots where I just need some extra stability. I do have a ball & socket head but it's a basic one without any independent panning ability so there's not much point using it on a monopod.

I've used it to good effect as a temporary walking stick (I don't need one normally) on long walks which is where the wrist strap comes in handy. I've also thought it would make a good cosh when folded - for self defence of course
