  • I am wanting to purchase a new lens

    Hello all,

I cannot go into details yet but I COULD be a part of a wildlife photography tour in my area. I own a Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTI. The only zoom lens I currently own is a 75 - 300mm lens. I want more zoom than i currently have. I also would like to have image stabilization. Any suggestions?
and I also am going to purchase a new tripod I was thinking a Manfrotto but was not sure which would be best suited for my needs.

I, & Pops I believe, have a Canon 100-400mm L series lens with IS Its a great lens, though not cheap as you may imagine. There are no doubt cheaper Sigma equivalents.

As for a Monopod, both Pol and I use the Manfrotto Neotec model, its the best one I have ever used, again not cheap though.

      Steven,
What kind of head do you suggest? I was wondering if the ball heads are any good. I was considering this:
      http://www.manfrotto.com/Jahia/site/manfrotto/cache/off/pid/2319?livid=80|81&idx=83

I looks like it would be both easy and convenient to use.let me know what you think.

Hi Jennifer - can you give us an idea of your budget?

The need for IS in the lens limits your choice quite a bit.

I have the Manfrotto 222 Grip Action Ball Head, recommended by Andy Rouse at the time I bought it. It's very quick and easy to use for swinging the kit around.

          Here's a link

Both the grip action ball heads are quick and easy for wildlife - both the one you have in mind and the 222, though I've only ever used the 222 so I can't comment on the other one.

I misread your Original post Jennifer and I talked about a monopod, when you said tripod There is however a Neotec tripod. However if you want something more conventional, there is a new replacement for the 190 called the 190X. it seems like a very good option.

So far as a head is concerned, ball heads are ok but the problem with them is that when they are released for adjustment, the camera can move through more than one plane, so for critical work it can be a real pain. The one you linked to is the one I'd go for though if I was to buy a new one.

Personally I'd recommend a small 3 way pan and tilt, these offer more control than a ball head. Something like the 804, though you will be able to find other models on your favourite dealers site no doubt

TBH - I'd suggest having both - a pan and tilt and a decent wildlife ball head. Different heads are better at different tasks imho and there's always such a thing as a Xmas present wishlist.

Having said that - I've used the 222 ball head very more than the pan and tilt (I'm not a landscape photographer, not by any stretch of the imagination).
