  • Photos of Cyprus

    Hi everyone,

I've been back for just a week after spending a month in Cyprus. Had the best holiday ever and have started to post some of the shots in my gallery. I will continue to add photos as and when I get time. I came back to a leaking washing machine among all else! Nice eh?

Please feel free to comment on any of my photos, I look forward to reading them.

Your photo of a 'Lily' I enjoyed...love the colours...also remind me of my garden in South Africa...as had these growing! They are in fact called Strelitzia or Crane Flower...not sure of the spelling however! Lucky you spending a whole month in Cypress....beautiful place!

      Hi Jocelyn,

Blithe has correctly spotted the flower as a BIRD OF PARADISE. I have never seen one of these close up so thought it was a lilly. It wilted after the third day, the temperature was averaging at about 42 degrees.

      Wonderful holiday.

They are called all three of those names - Bird of Paradise and Crane flower being the generic names and Strelizia - part of the Latin name. My mum has a bush in her garden - they are very dramatic.

There's a huge spread of them growing at the bottom gate of Kirstenbosch Gardens and this bush has become known as Nelson Mandela's Gold. I will dig out a picture of it but unfortunately at the time that I was there it wasn't in bloom.
