  • Guess the bird and win...

    ...absolutely nothing

Just thought this was an unusual member of the flying squad at a bird of prey display I saw this afternoon.....mind you, there was also a Raven and a Red-legged Seriema Crane!

I know what it is obviously and Jocelyn - you have an unfair advantage so keep quiet

Ron beat me to it, but I thought they had longer beaks? They are relatives of kingfishers, are they not or am I squawking up the wrong tree?

Oh well, obviously too easy . Don't see many in Essex though! This one flies at "Tropical Wings" South Woodham Ferrers. Unfortunately I've never heard its call except on TV.

No, I don't think you are. IIRC the handler said that they are the biggest of the kingfisher family. Must admit, I think I've seen pictures where the beak is longer - perhaps a different type of kookaburra?

Very nice picture. I wouldn't have known what it was without spending some time looking it up.

I have a link for bird/animal sounds and there's a Kookaburra wav file included. Go HERE and hopefully it'll be the right sound for the bird in the picci.

Its a Kookaburra, native in Australia where we get woken by the calls at dawn & again very active at dusk! They are indeed the largest of Kingfisher family! Found mainly in wooded areas or leafy suburbs!
