Hope this is the correct forum to thank Ian and everyone at DPNow for awarding "Pterodactyl" as POTD today, I am truly humbled by all the very kind remarks and I hope you all were able to get a good look at one gorgeous bird.

It's an inspirational shot.
Heck - you even captured the water droplet on its beak to let us know it had been fishing.
Superb lighting too with just the right amount of light on those feathers.
Thank you so much for using our DPN gallery for that one.

May I add my congratulations on a really superb shot. The composition gives space for the bird to fly into, sharp as a pin and perfectly exposed, would have been all to easy to loose the white area head detail.
I would have posted this with you POTD image but I don't recognize where the link is.

Thanks for that explanation Ian. I look forward to a practical test. As I remember from film days, so no crop factor involved, the lens aperture remains the same and it is this that combined with the focal length determines the DOF. Converters may reduce the exposure but dont alter the aperture so I'm thinking DOF should be the same with or without converter.

Weeeeeeeelllll.... The converter changes the focal length, so the aperture IS changed (aperture is the diameter of the lens in relation to its focal length) - even though the physical size of the aperture isn't changed.

Found this on the web. Shows how the DOF changes for different apertures, focal length and distances of subject. Very interesting stuff. And yes Ian you were right DOF is about half with a 1.4 converter.
Lumix, I am not sure what you have been referring to but thanks again everyone for the kind comments.
We've been speculating how narrow the depth of field must have been on your shot - as it's so sharp we reckon that you got the focus just right, despite the DOF being so narrow at full aperture
