  • DPNow mini meet, Hadrians Wall: Open invite

Andrew, Tim and myself are planning a trip to Hadrians Wall on Thursday, possibly Friday September 6th or 7th. The 6th is first choice unless the weather is poor.

We are planning to get into position looking directly East for 05.45 at the latest. The plan is to take shots looking along the ridge known as Steel Rigg and to get the sunrise. We will then be exploring other photographic possibilities along the ridge and Hadrians Wall. This is one possibility.

Once we have used the light to best advantage, we will no doubt be looking for a greasy spoon somewhere and head home.

We will be happy to meet anyone else there, but we will be leaving Wakefield around 03.00. If anyone is interested, or has any questions, feel free to get in touch.

Sounds a brilliant idea, a beautiful place that I haven't been to for years - unfortunately I'll be down the other end of the country - probably returning from a holiday in Devon/Cornwall after a visit to the Great Dorset Steam Fair. Going to be camping (this'd better be good, I haven't slept under canvas since I was 11 !)

        Sorry can't make this one.

But it is any area we need to re-explore sometime!

Some of you may have seen this area featured on 'Britains Favourite View' on the TV tonight. It was the choice of Clive Anderson

            Hi Stephen,

I would be interested in meeting up for this, could you send me more info regarding where everyone will meet.

Have found Steel Rigg on Memory Map, it is off the B6318, the road leading to it passes 'Once Brewed' and I note that there is parking with a panoramic viewpoint with 'Tower Peel' written over the viewpoint symbol, (OS Map&Grid Reference NY 75285 67583) is this where we would be meeting?

Hi Brian, the details in my OP are the plan so far. There is a car Park HERE

If you use the Hybrid version of the map, which the link is set on now you can pull back from that position to see the route from where you are coming from.

As I said earlier we are planning on getting in position to see the sun rise and it should be shining pretty much along the ridge. Once thats happened we will be trying other locations both on top and around the Sill (Whin Sill) known as Steel Rigg at this point. There is a classic shot looking up a gap in the Sill where there is the famous tree.

Basically though we get there early 5.45 and 'play it by ear' Bring strong shoes, warm clothes and some sustenance There are no shops and cafe's up there Oh and don't forget your camera gear and a Tripod. Once we have enough shots,we usually head for the nearest town for a 'heart attack on a plate'

I knew there had to be a benefit somewhere. Ok, you can wake me up for that bit...

And for anyone who is still in doubt about the potential of the area HERE is another. Can't promise the same conditions, but we'll get something

Working on a couple now, Andrew has a couple in his gallery. So yes we went, though only Andrew and I. Tim was unwell and had to cry off at the last minute. The main purpose of the visit was to get sunrise along Steel Rigg at Hadrians Wall. The sunrise never happened as the ridge was shrouded in mist. We did not waste our time though, and took some shots at other locations though as you will see eventually, the mist and low cloud spoilt things considerably.

We then went across country in a southerly direction and ended up in Teesdale and visited High Force. Will start a new thread when I get time and have edited more shots.

I couldn't do this meet becuase of its logistics for me but thanks to the tip off about the location I went up there a bit later in the day on a weekend and got a few pics as well as a good drenching. Here is one of them.
