Have any members any experience of this, if so are there any known problems, things to watch out for.

Just make sure you dont stand too close if it is a stormy day Mike.....they are notorious for attracting lightening!

Having flown in a light aircraft, but not with a camera, I would think a bean bag would be useful. Vibration as I recall could be a problem so a rigid mount would make life difficult. Flying is OK but it dose make your arms ache.

                Re: Aerial Photography

                Hi Ekkl,
well the reason I ask is the pilot is a customer of mine who owns his plane and flies from a local field, we have just realised we have a similar intrest......Photography, he was showing me some photos of our area he had a friend take and I said id love to have a crack at it.
Further more he needed assistance with a project that I said I could help with, and we agreed on a trade. I give him some of my time and experience and he will take me up to take some photos. A cornish trade off
Its a 2 seater that he does pleasure flights in and he says the windows can be opened so not to get window reflection.
As this is likely to be a one time trip for me as I really hate flying and I mean hate it, I normally have jelly legs the day before I fly and Ive only flown twice before, theres alot to overcome before I even take a photo.............but I will just to get some good photos.......I hope

                  Re: Aerial Photography

Mike don't forget to use the fastest shutter speed you can. Get the pilot to bank over to your side so you get an unobstructed view with the camera. Think I'd prefer a time of day when there are some shortish shadows just to make things stand out a little. Not done it myself, though I've had it done for me by a colleague.

                    Re: Aerial Photography

Thanks Stephen, The pilot has said that we need a certain type of light cloud to ensure we dont get a haze, not a bright sunny day, having seen some of his photos I'm preety sure he knows how to give the best postion for shots. he has just started shooting in raw and from his files I have an idea of the type of settings he's used. So I wont be flying blind (so to speak) sorry I was waiting for a pun

Hi Mike. I misread your first post as a call for general information, seems you were just after photography advice

                      Sorry, as you were

(You could ask in this forum Private Flying for further advice, I know there are a few people who do this regularly.)

                        Re: Aerial Photography

Another point to be aware of Mike is that if the aeroplane is a a low wing monoplane it is difficult to get a decent shot without some part of the wing being in part of the shot. You are better off in a high wing aircraft like a Cessna 152 or 172 as someone else has mentioned. I speak with a little experience as the holder of a PPL and having done a bit of aerial photography.

                              Re: Aerial Photography

I've done it once ..... from the back seat of a Tri-lander earlier this year. Pleasure trip around Guernsey .... took about 15 minutes .... great fun !!

Nothing like a plane full of kids, nervous pilot, and a bunch of over enthusiastic parents snapping away !!

Laugh a minute ..... would recommend it !!

I took over 280+ photos by the way !!
