  • Better than nothing!

Just thought I'd share my tiniest bit of good news. I recently entered a handful of shots into Professional Photographer magazine's Photographer of the Year (2005/6)right here in the winners' gallery under my name, which is Tim Johnstone.

The magazine will be announcing the start of next year's competition soon, so like many others I'll be putting my best efforts up against those of my peers in a bid to secure at least a category win, if not the big prize. Does anyone here plan on having a bash?

Well done Tim - that makes two winners on the forum recently, with DTD netting a win, albeit an older image taken on a film camera.

Hey, well done! Yours is a crackin' shot!

Some of the pictures aren't opening for me in the enlargement window. Yours did but the winner's didn't so I'll go back later.

I definitely won't be entering any of their comps so no entrants need shake in their shoes (with laff'n) ....... LOL

Better luck next time. I'm sure you could win something - seriously.

          Bearface,

The truth is that I liked your shot much better than the one won.
Some pictures aren't opening for me either, but yours does.
I cannot open the winning photo but from what I can see from the thumbnail size, it is not a natural picture. From what I can see it looks that the girl photographed has been set up in order too look the camera and with her hands positioned around her waist while probably sitting in front of some studio since there background looks blank.

Your photo is a natural one, the woman is walking on the street, looking somewhere else observing something while she is walking, her movement look natural and generally I think it is a much better picture. But even if the woman was not moving and was taking this pose to be photographed it still looks natual.

(Excuse my English if I'm not using the appropriate words in what I'm trying to say...you've got my point anyway)

Well I'm flattered, thank-you very much! Obviously I don't know what the final judging criteria were, but at the end of the day these are people like you or I who ultimately base their decisions on personal, subjective opinions as well as objective assessment. As far as I'm concerned, anyone who enters is a potential winner - it's just the luck of the draw

                    Re: Better than nothing!

Well done Bearface. Very glossy shot.

I think it was the late, great, Victor Blackman who said the first rule of winning competitions was to make sure you entered them in the first place.

People should also put together portfolios for camera magazines, they're are some really good prizes on offer in the likes of What Digital Camera etc.

Thanks. Nearly everyone who has said "I wish I could do that..." to me has either been very talented already or has gone on to become so, often eclipsing my very best efforts in the process

Thanks DTD.........you didn't do so bad yourself

I agree about maintaining a contest portfolio - some of these prizes are way too good to ignore, and winning them can definitely save you a few quid
