Thanks everyone for the various bits of advice on the two questions which I raised sharpening and resizing. You have given me plenty to try out to find which suits me best. Thanks Patrick for the lengthy and precise instructions on your method of using layers and channels. I must give that a try. Also to Vernon for his tip on sharpening after resizing - I had not realised that would have influenced the quality of the result so much.
