  • Wow....just check this out!

This guy really takes his photography seriously. Just look at how he developed a set up to optimize his insect photography (click on "flying insects technique"), and then when you've managed to re-familiarize your lower jaw with the rest of your face, have a look at his Pbase galleries. And weep.....

If nothing else, it all just shows that even those of us with pro-spec DSLRs and lenses have some way to go in the equipment stakes...

They're technically very strong, and he's really gone to town in terms of the science to make sure of it. The only thing (for me) is that the images themselves - as impressive as some of them are - fail to move me on any emotional level. They're a bit soulless somehow

Patrick brought something similar up recently, when discussing how significant the technical elements were in terms of "good" photography. While it's important to get the basics right, it's clear that technique alone does not a make for a great photo. Necessarily...

Ture, but nonetheless, merit has to be given to such a techhead.....

Absolutely! I would rather have a picture with technical imperfections that moved me because of its subject captured at the right moment than a technically perfect scene that had little to say.

Taking a sledgehammer to crack a nut springs to mind. For those who have no knowledge of electronics this must look fantastic. Bet he got more satisfaction from building and perfecting this setup than he got from the results. Wounder if he was sponsored by Maplins.

Absolutely, the guy has effectively developed "the perfect system" for shooting insects etc. It'd certainly be waaaaaay beyond my own capabilities...

Me too, I totally agree with you (wonders never cease... ). When you look at virtually any of the iconic images of say.......the last 50 years or so, you can nearly always find something technically wrong with them. Yet the soul or the message within almost always hits home, which for me is what a great photo is all about.

Technique is important, but conveying a mood, or effectively portraying the emotion, the textures or the feel of a given scenario (via a still image) is the real skill in photography, at least in my opinion.

The majority of the shots seem very sterile to me. The absence of any natural environment with those ones takes away the reality of the shot and quite honestly I find them to artificial.
