  • DIY technique

    Dear All,

As some of you may know I have been taking various pictures of flowers over the last couple of months.

The latest pictures can be found here and I have also pasted some samples below. I did look at a home studio kits but having two mini tornados whizzing round the house (kids) this didn't seem like a good idea.
So instead I went for an inexpensive option i.e. if they hit it then no cost. This of course excludes the camera which I draw an exclusion zone around .

Anyway here is two pictures of my set up followed by some samples.

More samples can be found here. http://www.pbase.com/joshbear/march&page=allThe different colours of background were done by card and not in photoshop.

    Best Regards

    Josh

I like these. The set up is simple yet works really well. I am at the moment playing around with a home made light box, no pictures yet as I have just got all the stuff that I need to make it with. I spotted the spirit level on the camera did that come free with a mag I wonder . I did not see any type of flash was it all done with natural light??.

        Hi Josh

Yes I had the same mag with that free gift on it I guess it will come in handy as the tripod does not have one. Funny thing is my old tripod that was a cheap one did. My next question is the grip you have on the tripod what is it and where did you get it from??. I do not think the light box will come about till the weekend but If it works out ok I will post it here thats for sure.

          Hi Josh

Here are a few photos I took after tea this evening. All a bit rushed but I think you get the idea of what I was trying to do.I guess its all about getting the white blance right as the second one looks a bit blue to me. I will post a photo of the setup after my next try as I hope to add a glass base.

            Thanks for sharing this Josh.
I have been using something similar in my shed but on a much smaller scale.
What is that 'thing/tool' you use to grip the subject, did you make it or can it be purchased

                Hi,

the "thing" is a wimberley plamp

                Link here http://www.tripodhead.com/products/plamp-main.cfm
Have found it very useful for holding flowers. I attach the other end to a second tripod and seems very stable.

My tripod head is a manfrotto 322rc2 link here http://www.manfrotto.com/Jahia/site/...lsf=80&child=2

Nice shot peter. How are you going to light the base and background?

                Best Regards

                  Hi Josh

The box is about the same size as a crisp box. I cut out both sides and then covered the gaps with tracing paper. Then I put a sheet of white paper in the box to use as a background. I have two small tripods with lights on which then go either side of the box shinning the light from each through the paper. I also used a flash light on the camera.

                    Thanks.

I have been very happy with the sigma 105mm EX. Cheaper than canon or nikon I suspect, but gets very good reviews.
