nikon flash gun

i would like some help on this please, i have a nikon d40 dslr, & am about to buy a nikon flash gun, but i do not know which is the best buy, nikon make the sb400 for the d400 camera, but the sb 600 is more powerful, & the head is able to be twisted up 90 degrees for bouce flash, i wish to take some shots of my great grandaughter, & do not know wether to get the 400 or 6oo flash, can anyone help on this please,,,, john
