    Re: Cheap Memory

    Stephen,

I'm planning to get an SD card. The following link is a local store close to where I live. Check this card and tell me what do you think in terms of price and in terms of brand. It is a Kingstone though and I have Kingstones and never gave me a problem. Though lately I'm not following the memory technology so close. Have you heard anything about this specific card?

Price is in Euros. It is written anyway. 19% is the correspondent English VAT.

        Re: Cheap Memory

George this is the exact same card as is being given away as the prize for the Salon Competition. So far as I can make out they are roughly the same price in the UK. Not quite as fast as the Sandisk I referred to but you would hardly be able to tell. The Sandisk of course comes with a 100% satisfaction guarantee, some recovery software, and small soft pouch for storage. A waste of time frankly but there you go

          Re: Cheap Memory

I read something, that above 50X speed there is no difference in the recording speed of an image, but I don't know how true it is, but it must be true because I test it on a DSLR and on my FZ5

I tested a normal Kingston, a 50x Kingston and the 133X Kingston all of 1GB.
There is a difference in speed (very slightly noticeable) from the normal SD to the 50X SD, but I didn't notice any difference at all from the 50x to the 133X.

The same I did on the FZ5 and actually switched the camera to TIFF. TIFF's in the FZ5 are 15MB size files. Same thing, slight difference from normal to 50X and no difference at all with the 50X or the 133X.

If this is the case I prefer to give 15 Euros (around 9 BP) and get a 1GB 50X Kingston Elite Pro.

            Re: Cheap Memory

I've bought various special offer cards from HERE and their list is also a good place for comparing card read/write speeds.

That Kingston card is a very good read/write speed.

I just shop around for media card special offers and look at speed and prices then grab the best offers regardless of the brand name. I'm not a pro, not an ace togfa so the brand name isn't essential to me. No card has ever let me down yet either.

              Re: Cheap Memory

Last week I picked up one of these a 2GB Sandisk ExIII SD card. I must admit it seems super fast. I mostly use cf cards as this is what the 20d used but I may look into these 1gb cards as the do seem to be a great deal.

With the Canon 1D MKIIN there is a pretty big buffer, and you rarely fill it. However it is noticeable how much shorter the write time is with the sandisk over the Kingston. The main advantage for me though is when downloading to the PC. 1GB of images from the SD card will download in about 3 mins.

Not to get to off topic here as this is about cheap cards but like you I like the fact that I can put the sd card straight into the laptop no messing about with card readers.

With regards to speed, is it not true that the camera has a limit beyond which no increase in speed will be gained. I can't decide which card to purchase for this reason. I see no point paying for super fast card if the speed will be limited by my camera. Download speed is of no real importance to me, just the shot to shot speed on the camera. Can you advise on this please.

I'd pretty much go along with your thinking on this one Ron. Memory is certainly cheap at present, so I'd just take advantage of the low prices available on mid range cards with a good name. Amazon and the place Pol mentioned have some great deals atm.

I get regular emails from Argos and they have the Kingston at a very cheap price. Had not gone for it as I was hoping to find out the max speed my camera will take, then go for that. I'm not short of space/cards just would like to squeeze a bit more out of the old camera.

Don't you think you would get a price match then.

Actually I would'nt want to give them my money if they would.
