GoPro for still shots

I have a friend who shoots some spectacular shots with GoPros. I'm not sure he ever shoots video. He's an amazing athlete (raced on a snowboard at the Sochi Olympics) and his shots frequently involve sports like mountain biking.

I've saved several screen captures taken from videos but to the best of my recollection these are the only photos I've ever taken with a GoPro. Have any of you experimented with them?

I use a GoPro alternative (a Yi 4K+) and it's excellent as either a still or video camera - underwater as well. The main compromise is the fixed-focus lens, but nevertheless some excellent images can be captured - its all about getting shots where your typical camera can't go.
