Image numbering

Twice now I have noted numbering errors on my SD cards where there is a huge leap in the image number between two pics taken within minutes of each other e.g. from IMG_4251.jpg to IMG_8369.jpg. The card wasn't removed from the camera, numbering is set to continuous.

Any ideas on why this might happen?
Camera is an EOS 70d and the current shutter count I estimate at about 25000 (ignoring the jumps)

Is there any 'SAFE' software to check shuttercount?

I haven't personally used a programme for shutter count.

So cant offer any guarantee. But did see this one

Looked easy on YouTube.


Might be tempted to use this myself, if anyone else has heard of it.

That worked a treat. Showed the count as 25363 so my estimate wasn't far out.

On Olympus cameras the image file name and numbering is based on the date the photo was taken.

Wonder what the thinking is there, Ian.

Canon is straightforward ascending numbers.

It's always been like that You can also alter the file name formula and change some of it to be meaningful, like initials, etc. I think a straight numeric option is also possible.
