Oh yes! I am one of the lucky ones, although as it was our 2nd or 3rd cruise, I didn't know how unusual it was.

It is a lovely island, so old fashioned. At that time, they only had about 2 cruise ships calling each year and that was only if the weather was suitable. Residents had to go to Cape Town for some medical treatment.

A friend of ours was very envious when we said we were calling at St Helena as he had been stationed there. I believe in the Merchant Navy and something to do with the weather. This was for about 4 years and about 30 or more years ago.

Anyway, he had made a friend and gave me a bit of paper with contact details to give to this man if I came across him.

We were allocated an old taxi (or a charabang - when I get time I will post a picture in Picture of the Day) I asked the taxi driver if he knew Tubby ? (can't remember his surname) he said he did and that we would be passing his shop. The taxi driver took my paper into the shop but Tubby was ill and having treatment in Capetown. Anyway, he eventually got the paper, contacted my friend and they have since met with their wives in England. So that was a happy ending.

Just one more story. We had a Challenge on this forum called Steps or Staircases and there were only about 6 or so entries and two of us posted the same image of a Staircase in St Helena.

By this time, you will guess that you have won.

It made you put your thinking cap on as the Pound Sterling was the only clue, because the fruit and veg we now see in the Uk.

What do you think Rab? I should say it might be.

This is the charabang mentioned in St Helena and I just spotted it as it was going out of view when sitting in a taxi so unfortunately missed some of it.

I got one from that angle, but a man was walking down it and it would have taken too long for me to wait until he got to the bottom.
