Fridays was titled How to use the Camera. Its a pretty comprehensive guide to all aspects of using your camera in general and obviously is non specific to any camera brand.

      The contents are:-
      The Lens
      Sensitivity
      How many pixels?
      File Formats
      Focus
      Exposure Metering
      Setting Exposure
      Colour Temp
      Flash
      Flash Modes
      Shutter Speed
      Camera shake
      Freezing movement
      Blurred movement
      Depth of Field
      Maximising and minimising depth

Looks like essential reading for any budding photographer

John, I had some similar thoughts, but ended up buying the D50. It was less expensive (older model), yet could use all Nikon compatible lenses. The D40 is restricted in using auto features to the IS series of lenses. BTW, the kit lens that comes with the D40 is different from and more highly regarded than that with the D50. I got the D40 (version II) lens on eBay for a quite reasonable price and bought my D50 with a different lens. Good luck in your decision, John. I'd also recommend you look at the DPReview website for their tests and comparisons.
