My sad news

Thank you to those who have been asking about me.

I'm sad and sorry to tell you that my husband, David, died today after a valiant struggle with an aggressive form of Cancer which was diagnosed at Christmas. Sadly it was untreatable so he's been in a hospice having palliative care. It was a shock for us and it's been a terrible few weeks for the family.

Please accept my sincere condolences on your husband's death, Pol.

I just came back here after long, long absence and found this post instead to my surprise.

If I remember correctly, you and your husband got to know each other while taking the TV commercials in the 60's.
Quite a long time marriage life and suddenly it ended. I think I can feel the pains and emotions you must surely have now.

Hope you will not be too much depressed in order to keep yourself in good shape.

Our 43rd wedding anniversary is tomorrow.
We met when we were working together in Northwick Park Hospital. He was a Dr and I was originally a ward sister but had been seconded to a public health medical research project concerned with control if infection.
David was a junior Dr at that time and we worked together in the same laboratory.

He eventually became a hospital consultant specialising in pathology, microbiologist and control of infection and I gave up working to raise the family.

He died in one of the hospitals where he had once worked. It's a small hospice in a beautiful environment out in the countryside.

We're all very sad and missing him terribly but we're coping knowing he died peacefully and is no longer in pain.

He had metastatic renal cell carcinoma with sarcomatoid differentiation. Always a very poor prognosis.

Oh, sorry, looks like I misunderstood.

I imagine that if he was a medical doctor, then he must have made self-diagnosis and/or could get necessary medical data of himself from his younger colleagues and knew for quite a long time that he had a cancer --- was just pondering when to tell to you and other familiy members as well as friends.

I have a very strong feeling you're right. His brother died in 1987 with the exact same diagnosis and he was just 45 with a young family at that time.

David was always a very private person, always tried to protect us and it would be typical of him to try to avoid worrying us. Even a couple of weeks ago when he needed a syringe driver, He insisted it was still early days. I didn't really believe that, knew he was more and more breathless, knew he needed oxygen all the time, knew he was deteriorating rapidly but let him believe he was convincing us he still had a few weeks or months left to live.

He's arranged a very private, very simple cremation and for his ashes to be scattered back to nature so that's what will be happening.

We're all devastated but just relieved he's no longer gasping to breath, frightened of the overwhelming pain and at peace. He had metastases in his lungs, bones and a large sacral tumour, only one kidney too as the other one had been embolised on Xmas Eve.

He's been going through a very bad time.
