  • How would you handle this?

I think I know what I am going to do, but I would like to know how you would handle it.

    I received the following Email:

    Hi Audrey,

I came across your Waikiki Panorama image on DPnow and was wondering if I could use it as a banner in my wife's email signature.

My wife works for New York Life so we wouldn't be selling your picture but it would be used for business purposes and not for personal use. So if you prefer that we not use it for copyright reasons I fully understand. I have other panorama pictures that I have taken that I can use though they are not nearly as nice as yours.

I would crop your picture to use it as a banner. I uploaded the picture to dropbox if you want to see what it would look like (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...iki_banner.jpg). I'd probably add some text on the right side of the picture as well. Thanks.

I've had something similar and as long I get full credit for the image I don't have a problem with other people using my pictures.

As this is commercial use, ask for a one off fee.

As Graham said ask for a fee, but don't give them sole rights of usage unless they make it worth your while.
Regards Ron. Live each day as if it was your last. One day you will be right. Down sized to Nikon s7000 compact camera.

Well, I decided to put my name on it and send it, but by the time it was 13 kb I couldn't see my name and therefore I didn't think anyone else could.

He does not have the full res. so I am happy for him to use it. I suppose I was also a bit flattered.

I know it would be nice to have a one off fee, but trying to get currency transferred can be quite expensive and I wouldn't know what to charge anyway.

I have therefore taken the line of least resistance and said they can use it, but I requested a copy of an Email using the finished banner.

Thanks for your input, I thought it might be something like that as many of you are professional/semi professional.

It's nice that he had the decency to ask first, rather than just use it as is so often the case these days and he seems very specific about how it will be used. I get the impression that a worthwhile fee is unlikely, especially as he states that he has similar pictures that can be used, although not as nice as yours. In the end, it's how you feel about it that counts. Personally, I've long given up on thoughts of making much money from photography and am inclined to look favourably upon any polite requests that I receive.

          BTW it's a cracking picture!

My feelings entirely. If I had asked for a fee, more than likely it would not have been used, and I would like it to be used.

As long as you are happy to let it be used Audrey then that is all that matters.

With Getty now giving away small res images for web use and the the billions of images out there on the net, no one wants to pay these days for small web use.

Just a few weeks ago I had a e-mail from Estonia from a dog charity asking to use a image of my three dogs for their Charity event at a dog show.

Of course I was happy to do so for no fee as these kind of charities are close to my heart.

It was to be used on leaflets and a 4 meter banner, both would have my name and pbase web site on them.

Funnily enough I have never sold a image through Flickr but have sold a few through people looking at my pbase site over the years...go figure.
              Regards Paul.
One day I hope to be the person my dogs think I am.

Hat off to the chap for asking permission.
In all honesty I doubt if you would ever have known had he just gone ahead and used it.
I had a request a long time ago from 'The Heights of Abraham' which is a small theme park in Matlock Derbyshire. They wanted to use 14 of my early bird shots for the childrens area. I agreed of course and at a later date I paid them a visit. The photo's had been displayed for identification purposes and I had been credited. It did lead to my receiving quite a few emails.
