  • International Space Station visible over the UK this week

To anyone interested (and thanks to John Burns for highlighting this) the ISS (International Space Station) will be visible as a fast moving bright star in the night sky over the UK this week. For more information:

Tonight it will appear for a few minutes at about 9:50 this evening.

also, have a look at mars. southern sky. about as bright as it's going to get. look for the orange 'star' to the right of the moon. took some shots on monday night with the SLR but not processed them yet.

very good, bright pass of the ISS tomorrow night starting at 2101 in the west, virtually passing directly overhead (81 deg elevation) at 2105 and finishing in the east at 2108.

other stuff that are good to spot are the iridium communication satellites. they grow in brightness until they 'flare'. the HA site helps with those too!
will post a photo when i get home much later tonight to show how they capture on camera

Pure guesswork as to where to point the camera

If I get another chance I will do this differently!

This is actually about 7 minutes of stacked 30 second exposures but the big (and broken) trail to the mid-right is the ISS and it only occupied three frames, so about 90 seconds max. I may try considerably longer exposures next time. I used a fisheye lens, incidentally.

Have to say it was a marvellous experience seeing the ISS sail past the stars overhead and then fade out as it went unto the Earth's shadow - fantastic!

The view is technically going to be better tomorrow (Thursday) but the forecast for me locally is not good - cloud expected. Friday should be clear though

Went out at 9:50 and watched it go over.

It goes over again on Thursday at 9:03 to 9:07

This shows you where it is.

How long was the exposure for the Iridium shot?

Took a different approach with this one. Had actually read that the ISS was due to pass in front of the moon but turned out I was a bit off the path for that. Each dot is the ISS at 1/3 sec intervals

That was from last July. I now have a telescope so next expected ISS/moon bypass I'll be better prepared!

Re: International Space Station visible over the UK this week

Don't know, it's not due to do so in the next 2 months, which is as far forward as I've got forecasts. It's not that rare though.

Interestingly, the ISS is due to cross the disk of the sun on 6 May. Photographing that is whole new world of hurt though, solar filter required obv, also fact that in daylight you can't see the ISS' approach.

Probably won't be bothering with that one...

Tonight's attempt - but I set the exposure too low:

The ISS is the faint trail from right to left.

This was a set of 24 1 minute exposures stacked.

Have to ask, why did you take 24 x 1 min exposures when the ISS takes only 4 min max to pass over? Was it to get the star trails in as well?
