  • Conspicuous by my absence

Haven't had much time for photography as I work seven days a week in the ski industry in the winters. It's been an epic year as is evidenced by this shot taken of my back yard in Connecticut.

On Friday my season was cut short in a freak snowboarding accident. I wound up with a fractured tibia and fibula. I'll find out today if I need surgery. Obviously I won't be able to compete at the Nationals in Aspen later this month but I'll still go out. I should have plenty of time to take pictures.

    Hi Pat -

Ouch - that must be painful.

Wish you well with the results.

Lots of time to ogle the snowboard.

    Keep warm.

    Regards. Barr1e

Oh my goodness - that sounds awful! Sounds like you are remaining cheerful though. Take it easy and get well soon!

Hope the injury isn't as bad as you seem to be expecting.
That's an awful lot of snow you have there.

Ouch, what a horrible thing to happen! Fingers crossed you'll be fit, well and mobile again soon.

Take good care of yourself and allow your 'child bride' to pamper you for a while ... meaning do as you're told!

          All the best

Sorry to hear about your crash? Take care and take it easy and let things heal before charging out again.

                Re: Conspicuous by my absence

                Thanks all!

I've been leaving work early to rest my leg and it's allowed me a little time to work on pencil drawings of the US Team and Olympic Pacesetters who will be at the NASTAR Nationals in Aspen/Snowmass. I've finished four and have four to go. My plan is to give them the originals and get autographs of copies.

I have too much time on my hands. I did a little decorating of my cast yesterday afternoon. Good thing I have long arms!

                  Back at work already?!

                  Glutton for punishment!

And a very talented sketcher as well - any more hidden talents we aren't yet aware of?!

I absolutely love your drawings, they're inspirational.

I could never draw and sooo envied your drawings so I set about working at improving my own skills (or lack of skill). I still can't produce anything remotely talented but I'm learning to look properly and do a few sketches that are at least marginally better than a toddler's scribble.

Thank you for the kind words. I took up drawing about four years ago and was very disappointed with the results. I found some free tutorials online at http://www.fivepencilmethod.com/. The instructor is very good and he'll try to sell you more in-depth lessons on DVD but there's a lot of free content. I still have a lot to learn as you'll see when you look at the contributions of others. A great deal of patience is required. I start with a photo (this is a photography site! - apologies for getting off track) and work slowly from there. They don't look like much at first. Here's the progression of the first two days on my current project.

I probably have ten + hours to go progressing from the 4H pencil to 2H to HB to 2B and possibly 4B.

Best of luck. I'd love to see your progress

Wow, thanks a bunch for those links! I thought maybe you'd had formal training at an Art College in the past as your work is so outstanding! I was so bad at Art when I was in school I was thrown out of the class and my teacher accused me of "just fooling around being stupid" - but I wasn't fooling, I really was that bad (still am that bad too).

I only set about trying to do something about it last November and I bought myself a decent sketch pad, tutorial books, Derwent graphic pencils, Derwent double erasers and Derwent pencil sharpener (with container for shavings)

The book I've use most, so far, is

You can draw anything (Kim Gamble) (Amazon link below)
                        [ame]http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/174237798X/ref[/ame]

I'm gradually managing to get something that actually looks like a Tiger - still using a rough notebook though because I don't feel I'm good enough to 'spoil' my nice Derwent Sketch pad.

I shall probably spend quite a lot of time looking at that 5 pencil method link now. I'm very grateful for that, thanks. My progress will be very slow but at least I'll enjoy trying.

Sorry to get so far removed from photography but here's a view of the final product. The first five images were iPhone captures while the last was done as a scan.

Don't get discouraged. I did this sketch before and after taking the online lessons.
