Hi...Happy Christmas!....I'm trying to organise photos on the computer. I note that some photos clearly have the wrong date...I know that any changes get a "Modified" date...but many have the wrong info re. when it was taken. How can I find this info?....Surely the camera software records this in a permanent way? thanks Ian

Re: Problems with dating photos on PC.
Hello namesake!
What you need is the program exiftool. This is a command line utility but there is also a GUI skin for it called exiftool GUI
Even so the user interface is not crystal clear but basically you can change image metadata dates by adding or subtracting years, months, days, hours, seconds. You can change a whole load of other metadata parameters too.
Not sure if you are a Mac or Windows user but you can download exiftool from:
A command-line application and Perl library for reading and writing EXIF, GPS, IPTC, XMP, makernotes and other meta information in image, audio and video files. For Windows, MacOS, and Unix systems.
exiftool GUI can be downloaded from here:
Download ExifToolGUI 5.16.0.0 - A graphical interface for ExifTool, which is meant to help users read EXIF data, edit the information, export it to other formats or remove it
exiftool.exe and ExifToolGUI.exe need to be in the same folder (Windows)
Hope that helps,

Re: Problems with dating photos on PC.
Ian has the best solution.
As far as organizing my photos I've used this system for 14 years. I create a folder for each year and then subfolders devoted to each topic. Then if the info on the particular file gets modified it's still in a directory that identifies the year it was taken.
If you're not living on the edge you're taking up too much room.
