Following on from Pat's post, I've had another photo in one of the local papers this week, this time the Banbury Guardian. I'd been asked to shoot the local amdrams in rehearsal for their appearance at a drama festival next weekend for web and promotional/press use. My friend tried to download them from the Photobox album - obviously without a lot of success, so I sent them larger sizes. When the other local paper (the Daventry Express) uses my photos they always give credit - I might have to have a word with this lot... not a mention

This is the original - perhaps I should make my logo larger next time if I'm not going to be credited:

I've had a few in the local papers recently - particularly the other local rag, the Gusher as their photographer was poorly and couldn't cover weekends so I was asked to cover a few festivals and fetes. Might even get paid for them one day ;-)

I have a family party next weekend - of course that's the time when I've been asked to shoot several bands (unpaid, for publicity) and a leaving party at a local pub (name my price). Doh!

I also shoot occasionally for a charity in Milton Keynes: a young boy has had a recurrence of his neuroblastoma and needs to go to the States for treatment. I step in when their main photographer (a pro) is double booked.
Last week I shot an album launch for them at a night club in Milton Keynes but the one I particularly enjoyed (as I'm not keen on rap - in my opinion it has a silent c at the front) was the family fun day.

Mister Vee and Jamie Stimpson modelling their wrist bands:

      Jamie and the fundraisers:

And the lad himself at the fun day

        Well done Caz.

And yes you should have a word and ask that your images are credited, at the very least. Regionals can often rely quite heavily on citizen journalists and photographers these days so don't let them take advantage of your efforts.

Some tight-fisted and cash-strapped regionals have made many of their staff photographers redundant and are using 'citizen pics' freely. The very least they could do is give credit where it's due!

Too true Pol - I know at least one redundant press photographer who's having difficulty finding work. There are now so many of us "part-timers" (of varying abilities) that unfortunately it's made it difficult for qualified pros to make a living - there are constant complaints on several of my groups on LinkedIn.

However, if I don't think I'm qualified to shoot something, I won't do it - a recent case being equestrian photography: I don't know the first thing about it!

I'm just feeling guilty that the chap I suggested to replace me at the leaving party isn't available. The landlady (who's leaving, and wanted me to shoot but I've got a family weekend planned) has found someone else. I do know him - I even went to his camera club for a couple of months but left as it was more him showing off his latest wedding rather than discussion/teaching. He is pro, but I really wouldn't recommend him and his standards are slipping. I've seen shots of his latest wedding and I'd be ashamed to publish them - poles out of people's heads, badly lit and no direction as to posing.

Do other people find they have to be very diplomatic sometimes? My friend was recently given a mother/daughter shoot as a present although we'd been trying to find a mutually convenient time for a couple of months. When she put them on Facebook I was appalled - she does have a tendency to lean back when shot so the chins were multiplying! Now she's got the hump because her ex-husband asked for a shoot for a profile pic. He doesn't pose well, and it took half an hour to relax him but we were both pleased with the results.

Congratulations on being in print again but I think its very rude of them not to give you a credit
