  • My first artist's reception

Our local library asked if I'd like to display examples of my photography and pencil drawings for the month of July and I jumped at the chance. Today at 2 pm I'm hosting a reception where I'll be allowed to sell my work. I've never done anything like this before.

Since I only have twenty pieces actually on display I'm setting up a projector and screen to have a video running in the background.

Next Saturday I'm doing an art and craft show in the same town. I discovered that if I work on a drawing, people will come in under the pop-up canopy to watch. My wife then handles the selling. Here's a work-in-progress that I'll have set up at the show.

If you're not living on the edge you're taking up too much room.

I like your Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe drawings.

I wish you much success with the exhibition.

            Re: My first artist's reception

Thanks for all the kind words!

The turnout was light but I had fun and sold a few small items. Next Saturday is the art and craft show. My struggle is to not do too much on the drawing between now and then. I have a very hard time getting started on a drawing but once it's up and running I have a harder time stopping!

Re: art shows - I'm still very new at this. One thing I've discovered is that folks like the shots from around the world but buy ones taken close to home. I need to remember that when taking inventory to shows.

The few shows I've done have been barely break even events but I don't regret doing them. They are fun. A friend who is a nature photographer (bears in Alaska, etc.) stopped doing the shows when the US economy tanked in 2008. Up until then he was actually making quite a bit of money. The economy is reviving. Maybe it'll be reflected in sales.

How many of you sell your work at these types of shows and what advice would you have to offer?

Pat, I hope you have had even more fun and a few more sales too

I am just getting back to sketching/drawing and painting - after 45 years off - so I VERY much enjoyed yours

Best of luck to you! Please share your efforts.

It's strange but I have a hard time sitting down to start a drawing but once I get into it I can't stop!

Never got around to showing you the finished project of Marilyn Monroe.

The wife and I took 1500 photos in London, Dublin, and the Irish countryside in the past week. I'll be sharing a few in the days ahead.
