  • Open University course in digital photography

Julia has very bravely enrolled in the Open University's Digital Photography: Creating and Sharing Better Images course, which starts in May and takes 5 months to complete.

I have persuaded her to maintain a blog of her experiences once the course is underway.

It's a distance learning course and can serve as a precursor qualification to gaining the Royal Photographic Society's Licentiateship Distinction (LRPS) in still photography. For more information about the RPS visit their website (http://www.rps.org/).

The course can also be a cotributor to gaining a degree in various other Open University courses.

Julia is already two thirds of the way through a mathematics degree with the OU and does not require the photographic course for this, but naturally it counts towards her work with me on DPNow

The course is open to both UK and foreign residents - I'd very much like to know if anyone else, yourself or anyone else you know, is considering or who has signed up for this or a similar type of course.

I'll be very interested in reading about Julia's experiences. Did my LRPS a few years ago and am considering doing the ARPS this year.
I think it can be quite useful to have this kind of goal to encourage picture taking.

I'm another one who's thinking about doing this - have been a 'happy snapper' for years, but would like to learn more about photography generally.

However, my 'real' job description is changing, and I'm waiting to see if I'll be asked to do some legal training for that or whether I'll be expected to muddle through.

I have been on the OU website - already have a diploma in French from them. The course is level [1] so I couldn't use it towards a BA, which is a shame - I'm half way there!

Sorry Guy, didn't have time to get online at work today - but Ian's pointed you in the right direction!

Good luck if you do decide to sign up

Ian, thanks for bringing this to our attention. This sounds exactly like something I would be interested in. I have never considered looking to see what the OU offered and have only looked at local courses. But as they seem to offer fixed days/times this has always proved problematical (currently having two jobs that eat into various part of most days!) Good luck Julia - I could well be joining you on this one!

Did anyone else sign up to this course? Julia has received all her course materials and is about to get stuck in

Re: Open University course in digital photography

Hi Ian, I signed up for the course too (tell Julia I'm in T189 Red). It's been going for a week now and there are have been some terrific shots submitted - some are so good not sure why these people have signed up in the first place? Not sure I can quite get my head around the "conference" business - it seemed to start off as a bit of a feeding frenzy, then moved into, "I've got this, what've you got" and now seems to have petered into a bit of acrimonious "I know more than you, so there". I'd be interested to hear what Julia thinks about it. I do like the Open Studio - much more civilised!

Good luck to both of you (and anyone else who signed up).

I forgot to sign up - remembered the night before registration closed, but it wouldn't let me on the course

I'll be interested to see how it develops

It had been my intention to sign up and keep mum for a while however, these past few weeks I have been undergoing some medical tests and stuff which prevented me from taking it up.
October maybe if all goes well.

I tried to see the booklist, but was unable to. There were booklists for other courses, but I could not see the list for the Digital Photography course.

If anyone has the list, can they post it please? It would be interesting to see what one would have to study.

I look forward to seeing Julia's blog of her experiences and if Jojo would like to keep us informed of what she is doing, all the better. It certainly sounds interesting.
