  • Snowdonia in grey weather?

Hi all. Sorry I haven't been around for absolutely ages! I had a bit of upheaval in my life, and it resulted in me losing my passion for photography for a while. Now, however, it's returned with a vengeance! So much so, that when I get a precious few days to myself over New Year, I'm taking myself off to Snowdonia - just me and my camera.

I am hoping for snow, but I think that's unlikely. Stormy weather would be okay - nice dramatic clouds. But what's worrying me, is that it's just going to be 'meh' - grey, featureless skies. If this happens, does anyone have any tips as to the sorts of things I could still photograph in such weather?

    Lovely to have you back.
Personally I think that photographs of Snowdonia can look dramatic in any weather. Just wrap up warm, pack a flask and enjoy yourself.

That's good advice, thank you! Looking forward to it so much. Even if it rains solidly (and being North Wales, it probably will!), I can't remember the last time I had a couple of days to myself like that!

Wet weather and/or grey skies is the ideal time to concentrate on smaller details in the landscape, rather than the grand view. Things like a waterfall or cascading stream in a valley, a woodland scene, a tumble-down building, moss and lichen growing on a dry-stone wall, an old gate, a solitary tree given the black and white treatment, raindrops splashing in puddles, the opportunities are endless. The main thing is to have fun!

Hmm, that's something to think about - I remember there being a lot of tumbledown old farmhouses last time I was there. Lots of waterfalls too, thanks!

Pretty cold to stand under this time of year.

                Pleasing to see you back.

Using HDR is very effective in bringing out drama in a seemingly featureless sky's, particularly combined with a graduated ND filter.

If that doesn't appeal there are many very helpful suggestions already made on the thread.

That appeals very much! Plus the 'dodge' and 'burn' tools could be helpful too... thank you.
