I am running the trial version of CS2

I have just taken some pics in raw which do not open in CS2. The message is
    'wrong file type' however...
when I open up my canon raw software and open the 'Tools' menu I see an option 'Transfer to Photoshop'. For curiosity I selected this option and ...
lo and behold .. CS2 opened and there was my image.

Pops,I'm only guessing here you understand, but you could check first of all that you are using the latest version of Adobe Camera Raw. Go into the Help menu and then About Plugins, and down to ADR. The latest is V3.6 I also imagine your Raw files are CR2 so these should open up OK if you browse to them in Bridge, double click on one if they are there, and ACR opens up ready for you to make adjustments and process.

In the Canon software I suspect the file is being processed then sent to Photoshop. What is the Canon Software, DPP

Just a hunch but I suspect your version of CS2 is an earlier version and therefore doesn't support your 400D raw files as yet.

All that's needed is for you to go to the Adobe site and get the most recent update for "camera Raw" support.

Here's the link click on "Camera Raw 3.6 update" and that'll take you to the dowload page, which also explains how to install the update data file into your CS2.

It's a small download, about 2-3Mb, also very simple to install the file (a drag and drop procedure)

My K10D PEF (RAW) files aren't supported yet either, which is why I'm using DNG at the moment. It usually takes a while for them to get around to providing an update to cover the most recently released cameras.

Hope that does the trick for you.

I think the others are spot on!

I had to run the update to get the 350D Raw files to work.

Sorry for the delay.....sun shining and have been outside making friends with my local Robin. (got to within 8 feet of him today.)
Pol was spot on in that the upload was required to accept the 400D
Would you believe this is the first time I have looked into the CS2 raw and I have just 2 days left of the trial.
It leaves the canon software standing.
          This leads to another q.
Is it best to purchase directly from the trial or look aound for price??

whichever I realise that I will be on the bottom rung of the learning ladder

and had my own genuine copy of the manual too. You could always ask Adobe support to supply you with your own unique disc - or buy direct from the likes of Warehouse Express.

That way, you're *sure* you have your own unique disc and serial number so there's less likely to be any problems with reactivation if you ever have to reformat the HD and reinstall all your software.

Another point - if/when you update, eg to CS3, it'll need to be able to 'see' your earlier version on your PC before it'll install - so it might be better to be sure you have the original CS2 disc ... then you're safe and secure. The updates cost a lot less than the full proggie so you wanna be sure you'll be able to buy only the updates in future.

I'd be interested to hear if anyone's actually bought it from a trial version and, if so, did Adobe supply you with your own disc and manual?

              Pops,

I was just thinking - you could order from Warehouse Express and have the shrink-wrapped boxed version in a couple of days anyway.

Maybe I'm just an old fusspot - but that's what I'd be inclined to do. I like to see and handle 'hard copy' in exchange for my hard-earned cash.

I think that's just plain old fashioned common sense.
I was the same each time I upped my paint shop pro. I would never use the online updating.

On the same topic....i have just come across 'Adobe Lightroom' and have been playing with the beta version. It incorporates all of the cs2 raw tools and the same tools can also be used with other popular file extensions.

Aha - Patrick's yer man for Lightroom opinion and discussion. He's been testing it for a while now and talking about it in various threads.
