Have any of you upgraded the the new OS on your iPad yet.

I have and had a look at Apples answer to Google maps, I can't say it's any more usefully than google maps, but boy is sure is more fun.

Check it out, it work I believe with iPad2 and the current iPad, not sure about the first iPad, don't think there is enough processing power, the map is graphics intensive I would say.

PS must qualify what I have just said, the full 3D effect would appear to work only on one or two major city's here in the UK, London, Birmingham, and Manchester.
Leicester Liverpool, and Leeds appear not to have as high a resolution yet, not checked our Glasgow, Edinborough or Cardif yet.
I presume it will take more time for other city's and the big town to get the full treatment.

    Re: IPad owners

Haven't tried the upgrade on the wife's original iPad but will tonight.

Sounds like Google has put an interface to Google Earth in it. Some major cities like London, NYC, San Francisco have the 3D buildings.
If you're not living on the edge you're taking up too much room.

3D on Google maps has been available for well over a year, here are some views of Cardiff:

Last one is from Google Earth.

MacWorld's website has an article published today that is critical of Apple Maps...

Macworld is your ultimate guide to Apple's product universe, explaining what's new, what's best and how to make the most out of the products you love.

I have updated. I think the Google maps are more useful, especially street view which is much more complete. The 3D Apple maps are much like Nokia some time ago, great to look at, but away from major cities lacking. I have also tried editing and uploading a file to the gallery all on iPad.

The screen grabs in my post were uploaded by ftp to the DPNow server from my Galaxy Note. I can also post photos to the gallery using the Web browser.

            Re: IPad owners

It looked fun to me, but on checking more major city's here in the UK we only get the three city's in full 3D yet. London, Birmingham and Manchester. It's fun but by the time other city's are available in 3D the novelty may have worn off. And where is Luton it shows as a green field site.

Other than playing I will stick to my TomTom.

There is an item on the BBC news site about this:-
Mapping software packaged with Apple's new mobile operating system has been heavily criticised by users on social media.

This mentions errors in Apple Maps such as places missing or in the wrong area, also some areas when viewed in the satellite images are obscured by clouds! On the bright side, if you don't like Apple maps you can go to Google in the Safari browser and use Google maps there.

Yes it's got a long way to go to be used properly, Google maps has been around for many years and had time to mature. The street level view in Google is what I used a great deal when I worked, such a feature is not available on the Apple map. The 3D where it does work is very impressive and fun though.

The Apple Maps problems made the BBC News Channel at lunch time today with my mate Stuart Miles from Pocket Lint as the technology expert guest explaining what has gone wrong. Apparently Luton is now in Cornwall...

It's becoming obvioce that Apple maps has been released long before its ready, unforgivable by such a high profile orgonisation, it's rather disappointing.

There is a Luton in Devon, Google gives you a choice. I am surprised that Boscombe has moved well inland, Boscombe Spa hotel is now in Bournemouth. I have also searched for a place I used to live in Gloucestershire. Google has no problems in finding it, but search for Cam in Gloucestershire in the Apple maps and you could well be in another universe. No Summerhayes; Dursley is in the wrong place and no Cambridge, Gloucestershire; and it is monochrome!

                        Re: IPad owners

                        any more thoughts on iOS6?

i had toyed with it but figured it's not worth upgrading purely to get siri on the ipad3. the rest of the stuff that's been added has little appeal to me / already covered by other apps. i'm still astounded that with the 6th incarnation of the OS, there's still no way to see what 'Other' is taking up and can be managed other than doing a restore.

Since there is no cost involved' I can't see why you shouldn't upgrade.
The new features my be covered by apps but they could be removed to save space on your iPad.

It still shows on my iPad along the top with YouTube and such things, but not on my iPhone.
Google maps is still available through Safari, in fact I had occasion to use Google maps on the iPhone last weak when my TomTom could not find an address, a new development not yet showing. It was on Goople maps.
Since I retired I have taken a part time job as a relief driver delivering prescriptions, and as such get sent to areas I don't know very well. TomTom usually deals well with things but they seem slower at getting new builds on their maps, Google appear on the ball. In fact I drove past the Google camera that same day with its oilrig like kit on top of the car.
