Re: A Clue As To Why I Am So Enamoured With The Olympus E-M5
Nice one, John - being on the front cover of AP
Albeit 12 years ago. I was featured in an AP issue back in around 1982 when as manager of Harringay Photographic I won the AP Dealer of the Year award
But is the OM-D E-M5 really a digital version of the OM-4?

Re: A Clue As To Why I Am So Enamoured With The Olympus E-M5
Good question. In some ways it is not remotely similar and the two cameras are light years apart. It's not just the change in media which separates them, but handling, functions and features too. However, they are remarkably similar in size and concept. The OM system was originally launched against a tradition of big, heavy SLRs and lenses. At first it was dismissed by the traditionalists but very soon every camera manufacturer was downsizing their cameras. Its fair to say that Olympus transformed the industry and made a lasting impact upon camera design.Originally posted by Ian View Post

Now they are doing it all again, with the E-M5 and whatever may follow in the OM-D range. Big and heavy is out, small and mirrorless is in - for all but the most serious photographers. Even pros are starting to realize the benefits of the system. The digital Pen range paved the way, introducing the concept but with less universal appeal. With the E-M5 Olympus Micro Four Thirds has finally come of age. Panasonic arguably beat them to it, but many feel that the Pannys, despite being excellent cameras, lack the soul which transforms them from being just a highly capable tool into a synergous extension of the photographer's mind.
Just to pick up and hold an E-M5 is remarkably reminiscent of the OM4 in terms of size, weight and balance. The actual operation is of course entirely different, but the old "feel" is definitely there. Had I first been introduced to the E-M5 by someone placing it in my hand whilst I was blindfolded, then asking me what make I thought it was, I'm sure I would have replied "Olympus."
With this camera Olympus seem to have drawn on all their experience in the digital market to date, taken a great leap forward by significantly improving upon all they have done before, and blended it with the pedigree, style and concept of the OM system. In this sense I think it relates as a digital version of the OM4.John Perriment
