Smartphone photo apps

As some of you may know, Facebook recently acquired Instagram for $1Bn. Instagram is best known for its smartphone camera enhancement app, although this ties into their social network, too.

Do you use Instagram - what other apps for enhancing the smartphone photographic experience do you use?

I have just upgraded my phone (I dithered a long time between the new HTC One X but late on plumped for a Samsung Galaxy Note - both have good cameras as far as smartphones go).

Am also writing an article on smartphone image quality based on comparisons with 2 year old HTC Desire and a Sony-Ericsson Xperia Arc S, iPhone 4s, and a Nokia Lumia 800.

I have recently got an iPad and am currently playing with a few of the applications. Snap seed, iPhoto, PS Express etc. Immediate impressions are that they are good for a quick fix for snapshots to share, but many of the filters will quickly go to the unused heap.

I do want to try out packages for AV projections though, so any pointers in that direction will also be helpful.

Hi Kurt - yes I forgot to mention tablets; in fact my new Samsung Galaxy Note is half way between a tablet and a smartphone

What are you aiming to do with AV projections? Sounds interesting.

My local camera club has a few members interested in AV, so we have an evening where we project shows. also one or two members are more keen (and accomplished) and publish AVs on Vimeo, etc. I would like to have a go combining video clips, still images and music and output from iPad to projector, rather than rely on the club's laptop and software.

Does anyone know of a good app for musical scores? I am considering an iPad or may even go for a tablet of some form - depending on what is available.

I recently came across a free app for iphone or ipad that could be useful for Nikon users. It's called Nikon Manual Viewer which allows you to download manuals for Nikon cameras and speedlights. Most recent equipment manuals are available, if you are getting used to a new camera it's a lot lighter to have the manual on the phone than carrying the book around! (You can also use it as a pdf reader)

I've been using Instagram for awhile with my iPhone and like it. If you have access to Facebook you can see the effects I've applied to some of my photos and pencil sketches.

One problem I perceive with Instagram is that after a while you can spot an instagram effect a mile off and the effect can sometimes become the focus of attention rather than the underlying photo.

That is true. I have also used two other Facebook photo apps.

CamWow produces some bizarre effects really for novelty more than anything else.

Photosynth does an excellent job of creating panoramas. Take a look at [ame="http://photosynth.net/view.aspx?cid=1c196205-7763-4e1b-b862-5b2ab2ca3d11"]this link[/ame]. Once it's loaded click on the small PLAY button or you can just drag the image. It's a free app for the iPhone and does the stitching automatically.
