  • Which free photo sharing sites do you use and recommend?

Flickr, Picasa, PhotoBucket, Windows Live, etc. -they all offer free (and sometimes premium paid) accounts. Which free photo sharing online service do you use and would you recommend it (or even them?). What's really good and where can they be improved?

I'm starting some research on such services, specifically free ones, although am still interested in services that offer free and premium paid accounts.

Your feedback will help me to compile an article on what will be identified as the ten best such services

Re: Which free photo sharing sites do you use and recommend?

I've bounced between 500px, Flickr and Picasa since I closed my own site down a couple of years ago.

Non of them are perfect. 6 months ago I'd have recommended 500px but I haven't signed in there for months. I went back to Flickr for a while but again haven't signed in for a month or so.

Maybe the community/group thing isn't for me.

I have heard some complaining about the quality of resizing on Flickr. I have used Flickr and it seems to do the job OK, although there are limits that might force you into having to pay for it. I have just started to experiment with Picasa - it looks quite good if a bit fussy in presentation compared to Flickr.

I've had issues with the quality of resizing on Flickr.

One problem I've got with all the photo sharing sites I've tried is that non of them allows you to upload a reprocessed/differently cropped version of a shot. You have to delete the older version and upload the new version as a new photo.

David everyone I have used including Flickr has allowed you to replace a photo without deleting it and uploading another, that way any comments on it are not lost.

B****r, I never noticed that. I'll have to check out Picasa. I know you can't replace on 500px as I messaged them to ask if it was possible.

            Edit;

I just checked Flickr and don't get the 'Replace this photo' option. Maybe you have to pay to get that.

Pretty much Photobucket but I resize before uploading.

Sometimes I use Picasa but only for my volleyball hobby - because of they have site in google server and it is easy to link the gallery to that web site. The software is great for viewing raw images but a bit pain to use for uploading. Then again maybe it is because I have used with other RAW processing software. Mostly I put the pics into zip and upload them into web server. I have also used VicMan Photo! Web Album to create the gallery and upload to webserver. The main reason for that is because of I hate Picasa telling me each time "You are using a browser that is not fully supported." and also the fact that if I make a gallery and post the link somewhere then through that link it is possible to see only those pictures that are relevant. There is also somekind of possibility in Picasa to see the gallery with a direct link only or something but I have experienced troubles with that - for example one link opened without any problems in my wifes comp but refused in 3 others.

Had lots of discussion elsewhere as to Picassa postings stripping exif info from images and leaving very basic info which in no way reflects settings and/or equipment used.

                  Anyone else found that?

I use Flickr for links to various groups and have linked my profile to this site.

I don't know if it's the same kind of thing that you're after, but has anyone tried the "Photos" folder of Dropbox?

You just drop your photos in folders within the "Photos" folder and they get uploaded/sync'd with Dropbox. When you send someone the folder's shareable link, the recipient sees a gallery and clicks to view the photos. The photos aren't altered in anyway as far as I'm aware, and there's no messing about with uploading through websites. To change your photos, just change them in your computer's Dropbox folder, and the changes are sync'd online.

Probably doesn't have all the features of dedicated photo sharing sites, but it works for me when sharing photos with friends and family.

I've been very happy with Picasa and do bulk uploads for my ski club events with their program which has a very nice face recognition feature. I used it to cull through thousands of photos to find shots of one particular ski club member and then used another of Picasa's features to create a Face Movie. I uploaded it to YouTube so you can see how it works.
